CSI Files
Captain
Hello World!
After reading a lot of reviews, quotes, and commentary about the CSI shows over the last few months, there a couple of trends/common themes I've seen, one of which bugs me. I notice David Caruso often gets taken to task for his performance in CSI: Miami and frankly, I'm puzzled as to why. Horatio Caine is a caring, determined, and passionate detective, and Caruso is excellent at telegraphing the tiniest nuances, be it Horatio's suspicion over a suspect's story, or his compassion for the family of a victim. So I've come up with a couple of theories as to why Caruso gets such a tough rap.
Admittedly, Horatio sometimes comes off as a slick character. Unlike William Petersen on CSI who delivers clever quips with an understated calm, Caruso has a smooth, arch way of saying things that make those slick lines come out as just that: slick. But that's part of the fun of Miami: Horatio's sunglasses, his hands on his hips (something reviewers and viewers seem to object to) and his witty comebacks all contribute to the powerful atmosphere Miami possesses. Miami is a slick town, and quick-witted Horatio fits right in.
Horatio probably couldn't be much more different from Petesen's Gil Grissom. Whereas Grissom often comes across as detached, Horatio is clearly passionate about his cases. An emotional case leads Grissom to half-confess his feelings for Sara (but not to Sara; rather, to a murder suspect); a devastating case causes Horatio to promise a fifteen-year-old girl that he won't give up until he can tell her she's safe. The two men aren't cut from the same mold; Grissom is a scientist, a man who is doggedly determined to see each case to completion, but not necessarily for emotional reasons. On the other hand, Horatio expresses as much concern for the survivors as he does for the victims, a characteristic that nicely balances his witty one-liners.
And then there's NYPD Blue. Many viewers probably haven't forgiven Caruso for his arrogant abandonment of the series that made him a star. I admit, before watching CSI: Miami, I had my doubts. But it's been ten years since he left Blue, and Caruso deserves to be forgiven for it. He's turning in such a good performance on CSI: Miami that it would be a darn shame not to let Caruso's past history go.
