Captain
<font size="3">Hello World!</font>

Well, here we are again...the past two-and-a-half months flew by during my sojourn in Canberra. Instead of spending lazy-hazy-crazy days by the pool, I was actually able to put my long summer break to good use, burying myself in a long-term research project, thanks to the hospitality of the Australian National University.

Reports of my elevation to professorial status are greatly exaggerated (story). They stem from a letter that arrived for me while I was in Canberra, addressed to "Dr. Caillan Davenport". Needless to say, I'm keeping the envelope as an incentive for the years to come. I won't bore you with details of my research, unless you have a particular interest in the Catalogue of Ships in The Iliad.

I've been told that my emails from Canberra sound like I was being paid by the Canberra Tourist Bureau, so I'll try and spare you the PR spin. But it is a beautiful city, and so easy to get around too, especially if you have a bike. During my time there I visited Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the National War Memorial the National Museum, the National Library, the National Gallery, the National Science and Technology Centre. If it had "National" in its name, I went there. (Or at least stood outside and took a photo of it).

The high point was definitely Old Parliament House, since it was possible to actually sit in the chambers of the House of Represenatives and the Senate and walk through the offices occupied by former Prime Ministers and their staffers. Also fun was the National Science and Technology Centre (aka Questacon) where those who never grew up (ie: me) get to act like little kids and play with all the "hands on" displays. The low, low, low point was the painting in the National Gallery which was simply white on canvas.

Like any returning traveller worth his salt, I have pictures to bore you with:

If anyone has tried to email me over the past two and a half months and you haven't received a reply, it probably got lost in the minefield that is my spam-filled inbox. Just drop me a line at caillan-at-csifiles.com. A big thank-you goes out to Kristine for filling in for me while I was away, and to both Kristine and Michelle for making sure the site ran like a well-oiled machine. Now that I've returned I'm sure that we'll be back to the usual disorganised mayhem in no time.
