CSI Files

Captain
Hello World!

So, the news is now official. The next CSI spinoff will be set in the Big Apple. But isn't it a little crowded there? Between three Law & Order shows and NYPD Blue, do we really need another crime show set in New York City?

I'd be curious to learn why New York City was selected over New Orleans, the other frontrunner for the new show. New Orleans has it all--a steamy, sexy, exotic setting, with plenty of crime afoot. It would have fit in very well with Las Vegas and Miami as a setting that would set it apart from other crime shows out there. Murder on the Bayou? Police corruption? Mardi Gras intrigue? The possibilities were endless.

So why no New Orleans? Why New York of all places? I'll try to make a few guesses. Perhaps, rather than distinguish the new CSI from other crime genre shows, the city selection was made to distinguish it from its parent show, CSI, and sibling, CSI: Miami. New York is certainly a far cry from seedy, sexy Vegas and glitzy Miami. It's grittier, more urban--if the show follows that tone, it will indeed be different from its predecessors.

There's also the competition factor. By choosing New York as the setting, CSI is throwing its hat in the ring in Gotham. How will it fare against Law & Order and NYPD Blue? No doubt the ratings watchers will be looking closely to see which show comes out on top. But with both CSI and CSI: Miami regularly trouncing all competition in the ratings, did the new spinoff really need to go to toe-to-toe with the two veterans? It seems to me the battle is already won.

However, if the second spinoff is anywhere near as successful as the original and the first spinoff, the CSI franchise will have proved itself once and for all to be much more than a flash in the pan or a new fad. Indeed, if CSI: New York is successful, there might one day be a CSI: New Orleans? After all, if the battle for New York is won, a fourth show is going to be looking very, very attractive.

Tonight, CBS will rerun the CSI: Miami episode, "Hurricane Anthony". Here is TV Guide's description of the episode:

Perhaps CSI: Miami's writers got the idea for this slam-bang episode when Hurricane Isabel ripped across the Eastern U.S. in September of 2003. But whether their inspiration was that storm or not, they've come up with some real puzzles that should test the wits of armchair detectives who try to solve the cases along with the CSIs. There are three suspicious deaths in a neighborhood after a hurricane roars through: a man who was apparently thrown through the air into a moving car; a second man who was impaled on a backyard fence and a woman discovered shot in her bedroom.
[/list]
