<font size="3">Hello World!</font>
Read any good books lately? Some of you are probably shaking your heads 'no,' while others are putting down the book they just finished and pondering what to pick up next.
I'm a big reader throughout the year, but the holiday season is one of my favorite times to curl up with a book. It's a very busy time, but there are pockets of free time just perfect for picking up a good novel, or a fascinating history book, or that CSI novel you've been eyeing in the store. Flying to see family for the holidays? No one likes the cramped quarters on a plane, but it is the perfect 3-4 hours to get some quality reading time in. Bored by the plethora of reruns and holiday specials on television? Take the time you'd normally be watching your favorite show and crack a book open.
My personal favorite reading time over the holidays is Christmas morning. After the presents are all opened, most of the members of my family will take an hour or so to sit around the living room while the fire crackles and (hopefully) the light snow blankets the ground to read the first few chapters of whatever new books we found under the Christmas tree. It's my favorite time of the entire day.
If you're looking for some recommendations, I've got a few. <font color=yellow>Michael Crichton</font>'s Prey just came out in paperback, and it's pretty near impossible to put down. The hero, Jack Forman, has to stop a rogue nanotechnology program that has become sentient. I haven't seen the movie version of Timeline yet, but I can tell you Prey is a much more exciting book than Timeline was. The movie rights to Prey have already been sold, and personally, I think <font color=yellow>Kiefer Sutherland</font> would be perfect for the part. My other recommendation,<font color=yellow> Alice Sebold</font>'s The Lovely Bones, has been out for a year and a half now, and it's still in hardcover. You've probably heard of the book, perhaps even had someone recommend it to you. It's the story of a 14-year-old girl who is murdered in the first chapter of the novel. Through the rest of the book, she watches her family from heaven, as she and they cope with her death. It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and Sebold writes with such insight and wisdom that you'll be completely floored by this book. I know I was; I read it a few months prior to its publication, and I haven't stopped talking about it since.
