Captain
Hello World!

Because I have children who get home from school relatively early in the day, and there are chores to be done and lunches to be organized, I do much of my writing in the evening. My computer is in the room adjacent to the family room, which is very helpful if I have to work when my kids have friends over or when I want to keep an eye on the evening news. But this is a hellacious setup between September and December, because of football.

All weekend long there are games -- college on Saturday, pro on Sunday, and then there are Monday night games and Thursday night games and college games at random intervals during the week (and if not, there's baseball and then baseball playoffs). The television is on constantly. I constantly hear cheering and loud announcers getting overly excited about Hail Marys that aren't heard and brilliant returns invalidated by penalties.

Now, I am at least nominally a fan. I root for the Redskins, the team with the worst name in professional sports. I've taken my kids to FedEx Field, we go to playoff and Superbowl parties every year. And if the University of Maryland didn't have a team so terrible that...well, adjectives escape me...I'm sure we'd be going to see them play too.

But I can't write with football on in the background. I can't think with football on in the background. And by the time it's all over, it will practically be time for March Madness.

Tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS will show "Double Cap" on CSI Miami. Here's the official synopsis of the episode:

Horatio battles the FBI and U.S. Marshals in this well- crafted episode as he tries to uncover why a beautiful woman was murdered poolside at a ritzy hotel. His investigation begins shortly after the bikini-clad 27-year-old is found dead from two shots to the head. Evidence suggests it was a professional hit, which is strange enough. But the case becomes really puzzling when the Feds take an interest and U.S. Marshals show up. Plus, the murder weapon may be linked to a cold case once investigated by Horatio's sister-in-law (Sofia Milos). Elsewhere, Calleigh confronts her dad about his drinking problem after she's called away from work to drag him out of a bar.

Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS will rerun the CSI episode "Got Murder?" Here's the official synopsis of the episode:

Some bird watchers find a raven with a human eyeball in its mouth. This eventually leads our CSIs to a divorced man and his 2 children but not much else. Warrick and Grissom look into the circumstances of David's unusual and first autopsy. This takes them to a car dealership where the man worked.

Then at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS will show another CSI repeat, "Inside the Box". Here's the official synopsis of the episode:

Things get personal for the CSIs in the top-rated series' third-season finale, which explores the intersection of the investigators' work and their personal lives. Three masked bandits steal a safe-deposit box from a Las Vegas bank in a daring daytime heist, during which Det. Lockwood is killed. Lockwood's death provides Grissom and his crew with added incentive to find the murderous culprits. But the case really hits home for Catherine when the evidence leads to casino owner Sam Braun, who is like a father to her. Also, Grissom's hearing gets progressively worse and he seeks out Dr. Robbins for help.

Friday night at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, Spike TV will rerun CSI's "Friends & Lovers". Here is TV Guide's summary of the episode:

Grissom and Warrick take the case of a young man who is found naked in the desert without an obvious cause of death. Sara gets to find out why the body of a woman who was buried last week is in a dumpster. Catherine and Nick investigate the killing of a school's dean by the school's founder.
