<font size="3">Hello World!</font>
I'm not much of a reader of thrillers, but Dan Brown is making a convert of me.
Both Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code begin with grisly murders that lead to international crime investigations, but by the time the whodunit has been solved, the questions of who's guilty and why have been eclipsed by bigger issues of faith, spirituality versus organized religion, fanaticism and the lengths to which people will go to protect their beliefs.
I'd read most of the source material for The Da Vinci Code, so while I thought the story was well-told, there weren't any big revelations for me. But I knew little about the history of the Illuminati before Angels and Demons and now I'm fascinated.
I'd never heard of Brown until I got a copy of The Da Vinci Code to review. That's presently a bestseller, so his books are everywhere, but I missed the earlier ones when they first came out. I hunted up his 1998 Digital Fortress, a techno-thriller in which the National Security Agency is held hostage by a dangerous fragment of computer code that threatens to devastate U.S. intelligence. Normally I don't go for stories like this, but I'm curious to see what Brown will do with cyber-reality.
