He was born Roger Barrett in Cambridge and met future bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour at school there.

The guitarist was invited to join Pink Floyd by Waters in 1965 but left three years later after only one album with his mental state affected by drugs.

"He died very peacefully a couple of days ago," said the band's spokeswoman.

"There will be a private family funeral."

Barrett was the band's first creative force and an influential songwriter - but his drug intake soon began to affect his place in the band.

Often he would be seen standing on stage with his guitar dangling from his neck, staring into the crowd.

I'm not a Pink Floyd fan, but fans around the world must be saddened to hear about his demise. May he rest in peace.

I think so, I know that the "Wish You Were Here" album was written about him.

RIP Syd. Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Thank's Tinkerbell this was one of my best friends favorite bands- ;) no matter when we were together- he always managed to put on their music- ;) I wasn't the big fan he was-but do have "The Wall" now he's passed away as well- :( so maybe they can hang out together wherever they are- he always laughed at me cause I'd say "you can't dance to their music" and he's go "no, you can't"- RIP "another brick in the wall"

*Sad* Man. That's so depressing. First, he goes into seclusion. Next, Pink Floyd breaks up, vowing never to get back together. And now, the one that kept them together before he got into drugs, Syd Barret has passed away. He'll be missed :(
