Naren Shankar To Develop 'Doom' Movie

CSI Files

Captain
CSI executive producer Naren Shankar has teamed up with Showtime in a deal to bring the story of the creators of the video game Doom to life.

Doom, which became available to the market in 1993, was the first video game to premiere in the first-person action genre and sparked a lot of controversy with its violent content. In the game, the player finds himself in a dungeon and must shoot everything he sees in its path in order to get out. Doom sparked even more controversy when the Columbine High School shooters admitted to playing it as their favorite pastime.

Shankar will adapt the story from David Kushner's Masters of Doom, which recounts the business endeavors of John Carmack and John Romero, creators of the game and founders of ID Software. "It's such a classic American rags-to-riches story. I really suck at the game, but the story of these two twenty-something guys is pretty incredible," Shankar said. "In the spate of a few years, their idea and technology launched an entire industry based around these first-person shooter games."

Shankar last year signed a multiyear deal with CBS, Alliance Atlantis and Jerry Bruckheimer Television that will bind him to executive produce CSI through the year 2007. Recently, the executive producer contributed in the development of the story for the CSI season finale episode "Grave Danger".
