'Miami' To Continue Peeling The Layers Of Horatio's Past

CSI Files

Captain
David Caruso (Horatio Caine) and executive producer Ann Donahue recently talked about the ongoing development of Horatio Caine and where it might lead him this season on CSI: Miami.

Fans of the show saw Horatio deal with the alleged death of his brother for the past three years until it culminated with the discovery that Raymond Caine was still alive. Little brother Caine ended up leaving for Brazil with Horatio's sister-in-law and ladylove Yelina Salas, and according to Donahue, they are not planning to revisit the storyline any time soon.

"We finished that whole arc about Horatio trying to clear his brother's name, finding he's alive, and then sending him off to a good life with a woman, the love of Horatio's life," she told Zap2It. "There's nothing sweeter than giving up someone you love for someone else you love."

"We felt it was a perfect ending, and now we had to say, 'Let's peel back another layer. What got Horatio so dedicated to saving people?' And we said, 'What's the one thing you wouldn't believe about him?'"

That one thing promises to be this season's big secret and it'll take fans back to the episode "Cross-Jurisdiction," when Horatio revealed he once lost someone close. "When David said that line in the crossover -- I still remember, I was standing right there on this gorgeous little island with Miami in the background -- he said, 'I lost somebody once,' we really didn't know the whole backstory at the time, because we did our whole crossover so fast," Donahue revealed.

"Everybody thought it was Ray. But I have to tell you, at that time, there was no Ray. It was a mysterious lost person, but we knew it would be someone important."

Though Caruso did not reveal what Horatio's big secret is, he promises it'll be very emotional for his character. "You see this man becoming slightly frayed," Caruso said. "He's carried the weight of this, and the closure that he received at the end of last year -- he believed it might have been a healing, but in reality, it opened a trap door to something that he's not in total control of."

It'll no doubt be another season of ups and downs for Horatio Caine, but according to Caruso it might finally let fans know why Horatio is the way he is. "Ann takes three years with all these terrific brush strokes, to bring you back to what appears to be the source of that pain, the source of that conflict," he said. "It appears to be this broken family and the prodigal son, these things he can't really embrace because they're not his. And that appears to be what the source of all this is."

It was definately a heart-wrenching episode to view :(. Donahue is still admitting that Yelina is the woman for H, and I'll be hanging on that hope :D

they really need to stop screwing around with the show. And yet I say again, the show IS NOT soely about Horatio. I love the guy, but cheese and crackers, peel the layers on some other characters for a change. *fumes and storms out*

Except Donahue has no qualms about writing a storyline in which a man gives a woman away, and it's the right thing to do, and the woman gets absolutely no say in this, because women have no opinions or feelings. Because being treated like a piece of meat you can just trade off is, like, sooooo romantic and sweet! OMG, I wanna be a piece of meat, too.

Not.

Watching this show makes me feel like I should set my calendar back 100 years. I can't believe this show is run by not one, but TWO women, and yet they don't seem to give a hoot's behind about the troubling way in which women are portrayed on this show. Giving Yelina away was sweet? What the hell! She's not an object or a dog, she's a human being! Good God, women were treated better on The Man Show.

This might be my favorite part:

"Ann, our commander in chief," Caruso says, "has it blocked out in three three-year segments, almost like 'Star Wars.' In a very brilliant way, Ann is telling the entire saga of 'CSI: Miami' backwards."

Uh, no she's not. She's making up stories as she goes along and it's only a miracle that this ended up being tied back to the Cross-Jurisdiction comment. If she'd been planning this from the start, surely we would've gotten at least the tiniest of hints as to what was happening. But the writers pulled it out of a hat like 3 days before the peremiere and now they expect us to believe this has been the major plan all along? Hi, I'm not 5. I'm a grown and functioning human being with a BRAIN. Stop being so patronizing.

I don't mind them making up stories along the way. Hey, carrying a show must be hard. But to try to pull this off in the FOURTH season and then try to convince us the writers are "brilliant" is just insulting and embarrassing. And what are they going to do when they get bored with this new storyline? Fire the actors involved and give Horatio another traumatic past event? No wonder the ratings are down.

And for God's sake, there's 4 other characters who are in desperate need of a storyline. How about we take the halo off of Caruso's head for 5 freaking seconds to let Emily or Adam or Khandi do their thing? Or is it written in Caruso's contract that he must be the center of attention even during scenes he's not in? If that's the case, fire all the other actors and rid us of this trainwreck.

Sofia is better off. I hope for her sake they never hire her back again. And if she has an iota of self-respect she'll never even answer their phone calls.

you know what midnight_tiptoes? You are absolutely correct.

First of all. Horatio is being portrayed as the center of attention. HELLO WAKE UP, the show is not about Horatio Caine. It's about the CSIs..hence the name CSI MIAMI. Does anyone else have a problem with this? Am I the only one besides Midnight that think Horatio is getting WAY TOO MUCH screen time?? There are 4 other characters. What did they hire them for if they aren't on the show? God I can see why midnight is so flippin mad. Have they not noticed that Horatio is not supposed to be the center of attention?

I don't care how many LAYERS Horatio has, they don't need to tell us. Yeah we get it. He killed someone, probably because he was being as self-righteous as he always is. How about they peel some layers for the other characters? Right now I could care flippin less about Horatio.

And what happens if they run that story out too? Do they just make up ANOTHER problem he has? How about, "Horatio was actually in a mafia gang in new york and they're coming to get him"? because these stoylines are getting more rediculous every season. First it was his brother, now it's a gang who wants him dead -oh yeah because a whole gang goes after one Lieutenant out of a million because he said something nasty to them-and then it was how he had some myserious past that he has to deal with..HOW DID THAT JUST POP IN??? The writers are just throwing stones into the pond and expect us to sit back and listen to this fooey?

Okay, we know NOTHING about the other CSIs, not to mention the fact that Horatio keeps changing what is so mysterious about him. No one man has THAT many problems. The other CSIs seem to be there just to fuel Horatio and his ever growing problems. Does it seem like the rest of the cast are just pawns in this little game? if they wanted to go in depth about Horatio that much, then make a show called CSI:Horatio Caine, and leave the rest to CSI:Miami.

We don't care at all if he has killed someone, or there's a gang after him or his brother was "dead" because we all know that when they finish, we're going to hear something else just as proposterous to seem to make the show better. WAKE UP GUYS we aren't 7 years old. I'm starting to think the writers are though. The story never ends with this guy. Make a decision. Either lay off of Horatio for a while or lose all the fans and get flushed down the toilet, because I'm fed up with the story focusing on one self-righteous man who's background changes more than I change underwear.

LET IT GO. focus on CSI:Miami. take a look at the tapes from season one and two. YOU HAD SOMETHING THERE.

Amen. I hated the character of Yelina because all she was was an object for Horatio to long for, or something for Horatio and Stetler to fight over. And then Horatio "gives her away" to his brother.

The Miami writers should be ashamed of the way that character was treated. It's a new millenium folks! Women have a say in who they're with--what a concept.

I'd like to see more about the other characters too. Or how about something new??? Why does it have to be some random secret from the past? Why not, say, a new development for Horatio or one of the other characters. Like Grissom's hearing loss in season 3--that was a development, a new challenge the character had to face. Why bring back an old secret? Give the characters something new to face.

And I'd really like to figure out what Stetler's deal is. He keeps hounding Horatio...why? But he does it with a sad puppy dog look on his face. That man just doesn't seem evil. I'd like to know why Stetler is always trying to get Horatio. Maybe the secret is that Horatio killed Stetler's family. Now that would be interesting.

Yes indeed, but it's just such a shame that there are so many loose ends. There's no way I regard the ending of '10-7' as any kind of resolution, even though the writers seem to see it as such.

I certainly agree that they should be ashamed with how they treated Yelina at the end. I liked her character throughout her time on the show, but I am appalled at the way she has been written off. There's no way, in my opinion, that a woman like Yelina would just go running back to her wayward husband for any length of time. Just leaving the audience to assume that's the end of it is an insult to us and her character.

You know, I love David Caruso and I used to be pretty amused with Horatio's whole Superman syndrome. HOWEVER............I am burned out on it like a new country song they overplay on the radio.

The entire show is so centered on his character that no other character has any chance to bloom or grow. They spend more time with him staring off into space with his hands on his hips and for crying out loud, I cannot even see his facial expressions for the sunglasses. It saddens me to think that a character that I used to love now turns me off so much. Overkill, Donahue, Overkill............

Explore some of the other characters and maybe without them turning into incompetent assholes?

Mild Spoiler******

Between what Ryan is being turned into and Eric being a leader one show and a sex fiend or drug user on another.......I just don't buy it. And where in the world is Calleigh's personality and laughter that made Speed make the comment, "She is way too cheerful for me." That was what made Calleigh herself. And if she is now depressed and serious all the time.............fine............EXPLORE IT, talk about, and let the viewers understand it.

The end of last season and this season so far I have felt like I am putting together a 500 piece puzzle with 100 of the pieces gone. I'm loyal to this show, but reading something that tells me the show is going to give me TONS more Horatio does nothing but tick me off.

Okay......let me say this again because I want the writers to hear this. We don't want an hour of Horatio soap opera. We want the WHOLE CAST to investigate homocides with their forensic skills and witty attitudes, not Horatio standing there looking pretty for an hour, trying to squeeze himself in EVERY FLIPPING SCENE.

Calleigh and Delko. Okay, fine they are having some problems. I understand Calleigh's problems. She loses two friends in a year. Okay, I get it. She's a little morose...Can we please lighten her up? She doesn't have to stay a robot forever. Remember season 2 guys? Remember bubbly happy, hair all bouncy, sweet, smiley Calleigh? I'm just getting fed up with the whole stiff, hair slicked into a perfect ponytail, grief-stricken look ALL THE TIME.

Eric Delko..don't even get me started. I completely blame the writers. They need a slap and a cold shower. Stop torturing the characters. Yeah okay his buddy dies....THATS IT? He's screwing up his entire life because of that?? I've felt better when my pets died. Okay, granted it isn't a person, but come on..no on needs to do that kind of thing..okay so he has issues...just leave the poor guy alone.

These writers better get off their high horses and stop acting like 2-year olds. We aren't stupid. What happened to the principles of poetics?? You have to stick with the character. There is no way in the ice caverns of screaming heck that Delko would bop a "chicky-poo" up against a window. Let's get to reality guys.

If they want to walk that line, take some advice from their self-righteous beloved character Horatio Caine, and walk that line carefully, because fans will not put up with that garbage.

*whew* Now that I've said what I needed to get off my chest.....Have a nice evening :)

Maybe you should write to them speed_cochrane, or send some feedback via the CBS site. It's great to vent your frustrations here (and it makes interesting reading!), but I know I felt better after having written to Ann D. There's a good chance the letter may not be read of course (who knows?), but it got a few things off my chest, which can only be a good thing. :)

Hmm, you may have something there Lucy. I never really contemplated writing to them, and I'm sure I wouldn't get everything I needed to say out in one letter, because frankly, it would take 11 pages just to explain the Horatio thing

But as for writing to them, It may be something I'm promted to do in the future, and I'm sure I would feel better after writing someone so close in the writing of the show. I want to see what season 4 has to offer first. :)

I gotta say, I'm getting to feel this way myself. I used to love Horatio and how he was so dogged about getting to the bottom of things. It was fun to watch! And it seems like the team used to work together much more cohesively in the earlier seasons.

But with last night's ep, "48 hrs"? Come on. He like psychically knew that guy was innocent? Uh huh, whatever. Like you say, it's become tired. And the rest of the team is getting robbed of screen time and development. That sucks.

Its a good saying. However, the past seemed better. They haven't moved forward. They seem to be going backward anyway.
