Mac Legs It In 'Outside Man'

CSI Files

Captain
Mac Taylor and Stella Bonasera will reportedly investigate the world of wannabe amputees in the seventh episode of CSI: New York, entitled "Outside Man".

The strange case begins when a human leg is found by a night watchman at the Chelsea Piers, according to CSI Files sources. The leg bears signs of heavy trauma, with scarring around the knee. The watchman said he didn't notice anyone around the area, and confesses that at first he thought it was a leftover prop from a location shoot of The Sopranos.

Back at the morgue, Dr. Sheldon Hawkes examines the leg with a fine tooth comb. The limb had clearly been operated on previously, and contains a rod inserted into the femur. Using the rod's serial number, Mac and Stella are able to track down the surgeon who performed the operation, Dr. Jim Willems. He tells the CSIs that the leg's owner, Alex Hertzberg, had to be operated on when he was injured by gun fire and the femur was almost torn off.

Next stop is Alex Hertzberg's apartment, but he's already dead by the time Mac and Stella arrive (not to mention his lack of a left leg). As they spray the residence with luminol, a large amount of blood spatter is revealed, and it becomes apparent that the leg was amputated in the apartment. Stella discovers something even more curious in the freezer — a human finger, and it's not the victim's.

The finger belongs to Joe Gardiner, a fifty-year-old transit authority worker, who is also missing his leg below the knee joint. Joe tells the CSIs that Alex had wanted to have his leg amputated for a long time, because he felt it was oppressing him. Mac and Stella are confused, so Joe explains: he and Alex are known as "wannabes", people who wish they were amputees. To prove his point, Joe stands up and reveals that he hasn't actually lost his leg, it was tied up behind him all the time! Mac and Stella now have to find out who it was who deprived Alex Hertzberg of his "oppressive leg" — and his life.
