I'm gonna have a Spanish course in September and will last 10 weeks. School organizes it. I'm studying computing at a bachelors level so it is just for fun! So this thread might come in handy! I've already had spanish at my high school but I confused it with my French so I'm bad at both languages at the moment. But Spanish sounds so cool!

I had at the same time english, french, latin and ancient greek for two years in high school. You should see the mess I made in one exam...

If you're going to learn spanish and have any doubt about it, feel free to ask me!

French, German, Spanish and English were the ones I had! With my own language ofcourse... Dutch..

So overwhelming.. German & English were cool. I could seperate them perfectly becuase I used both in my personal life... But then French and Spanish were to much. I love both languages but Spanish more so that's why I am gonna take a course in it...

the "to be" verb is hard... At least that is what I remember  So that one would already be nice and counting from 1 to 21...

I'm a native spanish speaker. Both my parents talk spanish as their main language so I guess I'm fluent but not with the writing. You can ask me too don't hesitate! :)

The verb to be is two different verbs in spanish. Ser and estar (I admit this is difficult to explain cause I've always done without think about it). I admit I looked for the diferences in the net and translate what it said

    SER

1.- To define and identify: SER + noun
Aquel señor es el jefe. Este edificio es una biblioteca.

2.- To say atributes (fisical and character): SER + calificative adjetive
Félix es alto. Isabel es muy simpática.

    * There are adjetives that change their meaning with SER / ESTAR
Juan es rico. (has money) / La paella está muy rica. (good taste)

3.- Temporal expressions: SER + time adverb
Es pronto. Es tarde. Es de día. Es de noche.

4.- To ask and say time:
¿Qué hora es? / Es la una.

5.- To place something in time and espace:
¿Cuándo es la boda? / ¿Dónde es la reunión?

6.- To evalue a process: SER + Calificative adjetive
Es bueno descansar el fin de semana.

    ESTAR

1.- To express a temporal situation: ESTAR + Preposition + noun
Felipe está de portero. El español está de moda.

2.- To say how is someone or situations: ESTAR + Calificative adjetive
La habitación está sucia. Carmen está preocupada.

3.- Ask and say the date:
¿A qué estamos hoy? / Hoy estamos a diez de octubre.

4.- To place persons, objects and animals in space:
Miguel está en la fábrica. La leche está en la nevera.

5.- To evalue a process: ESTAR + Modal adverb
Está bien descansar el fin de semana.

6.- To express a continuity: ESTAR + Gerund
Mis amigos y yo estamos viajando por España.

    7.- To express a situation's result: ESTAR + Participle
    La comida ya está preparada.

Wow, sounds interesting :) I don't know spanish, never learnt it, but I am interested in new languages so I would like to know a bit. Anyway, I can understand stuff given that I am portuguese and that we have similarities. But I am aware that my spanish accent would suck completely :p

I find it so cute using !? in the beggining and end of the sentences, but especially because the first one is upside down (I don't know how to do it with my keyboard )

The verbs ser and estar are also used in portuguese, so I get it.

Funny that you use 'rica' when you are refering to the taste of food!

I'll be checking this thread for more stuff :) Thanks poison_girl!

I've studied Spanish when I was a child and even attended the Instituto Cervantes in my teen years but my Spanish still sucks! My mom, who is a Spanish language Professor, wants me to continue with my learning Spanish. I sometimes watch telenovelas on TVE to brush up on my Spanish. :) Since we are of Spanish descent, our English is sometimes infused with Spanish terms and we use Spanish swear words.
