Horatio Goes Out To Sea In 'Dead Men'

CSI Files

Captain
The CSI: Miami team go out to sea in the third season's ninth episode, "Dead Men".

CSI Files sources today reported this episode will open with a newly married couple reef-diving off the coast of Florida. Underwater, they're wondering whether there's still time to explore further when they make a discovery that has them desperate to get out of the water as quickly as possible: eight floating corpses, tied together by a cord and already mostly eaten by fish.

The Coast Guard arrive and determine the maritime crime scene is located just a mile within Florida waters, placing it in the jurisdiction of Horatio and his crew. Delko dives in to inspect the bodies and discovers the victims were all shot prior to being thrown in the water, leading Horatio to suspect the men were the crew of a boat that got raided by pirates. Detective Tripp is incredulous. Don't pirates just exist in bad adventure novels, or maybe in some remote parts of Asia? But floating below him, there are eight silent witnesses that tell him piracy has returned to Florida, too.

None of the local fishing companies report a boat as being missing, but a harbormaster reports that the Margot never returned from its fishing expedition last week. Horatio and Delko go to talk to the owner, Owen Harris, who says he hasn't yet reported the missing boat because his insurance costs would skyrocket if it turns out he's the victim of piracy. Horatio is disgusted the man seems more worried about his business than his eight dead employees. Owen Harris gives him a puzzled look. Eight? There's eleven people on the Margot.

Coast Guard helicopters scramble to the Atlantic Ocean, but when they find the small life raft carrying the three remaining crewmen, they find they're too late for one of them. On the bottom of the raft lies Chip Manning in a bloody mess, his leg shredded apart by a shark attack. But at least the two other crewmen, Adam Kalmenson and Brian Waters, live to tell their tale. When a short while later the Margot is found, Horatio seems to have enough leads to find the pirates responsible for the death of Chip and the other eigt men.

But then things turn even uglier. Section on Chip's body reveals his leg wasn't just devoured by a shark - there are also human bite marks on his body. And while inspecting the Margot, Delko discovers traces of heavy weaponry being transported on the boat even before the pirates raided it. This wasn't an ordinary fishing trawler - the Margot was part of a full-blown weapons smuggling operation.

Please note that this plot information has not been confirmed by CBS or Bruckheimer TV and until such time you should treat it as you would any other rumour from an unofficial source. The details are based on an early draft of the script and aspects of the episode may change before it goes to air.

"Dead Men" will likely air in late 2003 or early 2004.
