IDW Publishing recently announced the CSI: Miami crew will be the focus of a new standalone comic book.

Entitled Smoking Gun, the 48-page one-shot comic will be released in October, 2003, according to Silver Bullet Comic Books. IDW editor-in-chief Jeff Mariotte wrote the story, while the artwork is by José Avilés and Ashley Wood.

The story revolves around a "mid-day shooting spree" in crowded South Beach, one of Miami's hottest tourist destinations. It's up to the CSIs to sort through the carnage and find out who was responsible for the horrific crime. "The story those bullets can tell won't remain hidden for long," the official synopsis teased.

Jeff Mariotte, who also penned the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation one-shot, Thicker Than Blood, said Smoking Gun merited a different artistic approach which mirrored CSI: Miami's sun-drenched cinematography. "By remaining true to the vision of the individual shows, we're delivering entertainment that fans of those shows will love, but will also appeal to anyone who likes crime comics with lots of twists and turns," he said.

IDW Publishing's first foray onto the CSI comic book scene was with the five-part mini-series, Serial, penned by Max Allan Collins[/i]. Jeff Mariotte's one-shot, Thicker Than Blood, is out now, and the first issue of a second mini-series, Bad Rap, will be released in August.
