I just had this idea and had to run with it. It's centered on Nick and Catherine.. Well, read on.... Reviews are appreciated....

What happens when fate singles you out for the one role in life that you never imagined or even thought possible? You pick up the challenge and run with it.

It was a late night and Nick Stokes was rather glad to be getting off of his shift. He walked over to where his Denali was parked and hit the automatic lock on his keychain. After the obligatory beep, he started to open the door and climb in. However, something caught his ear. It almost sounded like a crying baby.

Looking around, he shook his head and figured that he'd been hearing things. After all, he was tired and sometimes his mind played tricks on him.

Shaking his head and deciding that hes mind was most definitely playing tricks on him, he opened the door.

However, just before he climbed inside, he heard it again. This time, his curious streak got the better of him and he decided that he needed to investigate. Now, the more he listened, the more it sounded like a kitten and he was sure that he was going to find a mother cat with her babies. The sounds were in the dumpster however. Man, he hated dumpster diving.

So, he hoisted himself up and into the dumpster. He listened again and again he heard the sound. Although this time it did sound like a baby. He moved some of the trash out of the way and was surprised to see a newborn baby girl laying among the trash. Luckily, the rats that Nick knew roamed this dumpsters hadn't gotten to her yet.

He picked her up gently and wondered what he should do next. He looked towards the lab and knew that he could take her in there. That he should take her in there. The only one there right now was Grissom and he doubted that he'd appreciate this being thrust on him.

So, he did the only thing he could think of. He took off his jacket and wrapped her in it as best as he could. Then he jumped up on the edge of the dumpster and hopped out.

He walked with her to his Denali and laid her on the front seat next to him. He looked at the little baby and wondered who her mother was and why she'd abandon her in a dumpster.

He started the truck up and drove to the first person he could think of. Catherine wouldn't be happy to be woken up at this time of night. She had the week off and well, she treasured her time off with Lindsay. However, he didn't know who else to turn to.

He arrived at her house at about three in the morning. He picked up the baby and walked up her front steps. He took a deep breath and knocked sharply on the door. He stood their nervously waiting for her to answer.
She opened the door saying, "Someone had better be dying! Nicky what on earth are you doing here?"

Nick shrugged and said, "I've got a situation here Cath. I don't know what to do."

"So you had to wake me up? Why are you holding your jacket like that?"

He motioned for her to follow him over to her couch. He sat her down and then sat down himself. He laid his jacket on the couch and then started slowly unwrapping it. Catherine's hand flew to her mouth as she whispered, "Oh my God Nicky!! Where did you find her?"

"In the dumpster near the lab. I thought it was a cat at first. I'm glad I took the time to look. I didn't know what else to do with her. I'm sorry Cath."

Catherine waved off his concern and said, "Don't worry about that Nicky. We need to take care of her."

Catherine went into her kitchen and took out a baby bottle that her sister's little girl had used. Then she found some left over formula and mixed it using a bit of warm water. She tested it and when she was satisfied she walked back into the living room and handed the bottle to Nicky.

He looked at it and said, "Shouldn't you feed her?"

"Why?"

"I don't know. I just thought you'd be better at that sort of thing."

Catherine just looked at him and handed him the bottle and said, "Feed her. I need to look for a diaper."

Nick watched as the baby took the nipple in her mouth and sucked greedily. He smiled when she finished off the bottle in no time. He knew that baby's had to be burped so, he lifted her onto his shoulder and burped her. She let out a huge burp and Nick smiled in spite of the situation.

However, he soon felt a warmth spreading across the front of his chest. He knew what it was and groaned. He laid her down on his jacket and removed his tshirt just as Catherine came back into the room with a diaper. She laughed when she saw Nick wadding his tshirt in a ball and throwing it on the floor.

"She got ya huh?"

"Funny. I think we should put a diaper on her. Then we need to figure out what we are going to do with her."

Nick watched as Catherine put the diaper on the baby and picked her up and remarked, "She's beautiful. I can't imagine someone dumping her in a trash dumpster."

Nick shook his head and said, "Neither can I. So, what are we going to do?"

"Call social services. Have them investigate."

Nick knew it was the right thing to do, but why did it feel like the complete opposite of what he wanted to do? He'd never thought he had a paternal bone in his body, but this little baby had him rethinking that. He watched as Catherine headed for the phone to make the call......

It's kind of interesting...keep it up. It's well written. I think you might want to work towards giving the story more of a 'show' as opposed to a 'tell'.

Example-a loud burp resonated in Nick's ear - instead of the baby burped..you might want to say how the baby's body felt and such.

"show" is hard..trust me I know..

Another thing that would work is if you described what the baby was wearing when Nick found it in the dumpster-was it in a blanket? Was she dressed in a sleeper?

As well what race is the baby?

But it's off to a very strong start.
