Sorry about the odd swear word in this fic. I apologise in advance. Also, everything in this fic is completely fictional.

“Jeez man, what the hell happened here Jim?” CSI Nick Stokes asked, as he trawled through the assault course consisting of police crime scene tape and furniture. Captain Jim Brass was standing aside from all the mess by a solitary table, which was still standing on all four legs. “Well, you're the CSI, you figure it out” Brass smiled. “Oh you tryin' to be funny Jim?” Nick laughed. Brass stood there, still with a smile on his face. Nick continued walking in the direction he was headed. CSI Catherine Willows followed. Lying on the floor, in a pool of rich, scarlet red blood, was the badly knife wounded body of a young woman, presumed to look no older than twenty years old.

“Man, this is horrific,” Nick said as he took snapshots of the body, “who would do this?” “Someone obviously had it in for her,” Brass commented, “Otherwise she wouldn't be dead would she?” Nick continued photographing. “Hey Jim,” Catherine said whilst moving putting her gloves on, “we got ID for her?” Brass opened his little notepad. “Yeah, her name is Hayley Steinmann” he said. “Steinmann?” Nick queried, “I know that name from somewhere.” Brass nodded, “You would, you processed her brother, Richard before when he was arrested for assault and b and e last year.”

“Guys, sorry I'm late, had a mix up with the funeral homes again” David Phillips, the coroner panted as he stepped into the assault course Nick walked into. “It's okay David” Brass reassured him. David made his way to the body. He started to examine it. “First things first, lividity is not fixed so I'm guessing she died approximately an hour and a half to two hours ago” David said. “Okay, so it's all recent” Catherine said. “I'd say this here,” David continued, whilst hovering his finger above a wound to her chest, “that this is the fatal wound.”

Back at the lab, CSI Greg Sanders was rushing around, sweeping through the corridors. “Ray!” he shouted, “Ray!” Dr. Raymond Langston stopped in his tracks and turned around, “Yes Greg?” “I got an alert on my cell,” Greg panted, “four nineteen.” “Okay, where we headed?” Ray asked. “1735 Paradise Palms” Greg replied, trying to catch his breath. “Right, let's go,” Ray said eagerly, “oh by the way Greg, who's on scene now?” “Detective Vartann” Greg said. Langston and Sanders made their way to the LVPD parking lot.

“This is it,” Ray said, pushing his foot firmly on the brakes, “1735 Paradise Palms.” “Yeah,” Greg sighed, “this is where we're gonna find our four nineteen.” Stepping out of the newly polished, black hummer, they were greeted by Detective Vartann. “Ray, Greg, the body's this way” Vartann said. Ray and Greg followed Vartann up the pathway, towards a large, newly painted property.

“He's in the kitchen,” Vartann informed Ray and Greg, “it's the cleanest crime scene I've come across in a long time.” Ray and Greg made their way over to the kitchen. “Hey, you got any ID for him yet?” Greg shouted. “Nope, not found anything yet,” Vartann replied, “you might find something on him.”

As Ray photographed the body and surrounding area, he stumbled upon a family photograph, “Hey Greg, possibly his next of kin?” Greg looked up. “Possibly” he said. He was searching the victim's pockets. “Erm..Ray,” Greg said, “found his wallet.” “Do we have ID?” Ray asked, placing the photograph back in its original position. “Indeed we do” Greg smiled as he opened the wallet, "Anthony Steinmann, twenty four years old."

“I'm guessing she pissed somebody off” Catherine said as she photographed evidence near where the body was discovered. “Yeah,” Nick agreed as he lifted up a knife, “Cath, what do you think?” “Woah Nicky boy,” she said, lowering the camera from her face, “where'd ya find that little beauty?” “Under there” Nick said, nodding his head in the direction of a small, glass case, which was about two feet from the body was lying and from where he was standing. “Bag it and get it back to the lab,” Catherine ordered, “you may have just found our murder weapon.”

Back at the lab, Greg was searching through the databases for his victim. Ray walked into the room he was sitting in. “Anthony Steinmann, our vic,” Greg informed Ray, “is not in CODIS.” Ray sat closer to the computer, “Okay, never mind,” Ray said, “Robbins' got our guy in autopsy now, so let's go find out how he died.”

“I ran DNA on your knife,” Wendy Simms, the lab-tech announced to Catherine, “and I found two blood samples, one on top of the other.” Catherine looked slightly confused, “Okay, so?” “Well, judging by the results, your vic, Hayley Steinmann, was murdered after that knife either wounded or killed someone else” Wendy said. “Okay, we got any more info on the other blood sample?” Catherine asked. “I have got results which tell me that the blood sample has seven alleles in common with Hayley and belongs to a male,” Wendy concluded, “but it's all I can tell you.”

In the morgue, Ray, Greg and Dr. Al Robbins were congregated around the autopsy table, with Anthony Steinmann's body laid out on it. “We know what killed him?” Greg asked. “Well, he has high toxicity due to frequent drug use, in his body, which Henry confirmed was cannabis, also, I can confirm, even though your vic was high as a kite, he was certainly killed by being stabbed” Robbins answered, “in the chest, right into his heart.” “Anything else Doc?” Ray asked. “Apart from the high toxicity from cannabis, he was a healthy young man” Robbins said. “Thanks Al” Ray said. Greg and Ray glanced at one another, then left.

“So, the other blood sample, which is male, has seven alleles in common with Hayley, right?” Nick said, “so that would possibly make that sample belong to her brother” Catherine nodded her head in agreement. “Perhaps it's worth us putting it in CODIS” she said. “Hey guys,” Wendy said as she walked into the room where Catherine and Nick were sat, “hate to break up your happy hour, but I think you should see this.” Catherine and Nick followed Wendy into her lab, where they greeted Greg and Ray.

“So, wait a second,” Nick said, “you're saying that our cases are connected?” “That is exactly what I'm saying” Wendy sighed. “How?” Greg asked. “Well, they have seven alleles in common” Wendy continued, “and I found fingerprints on the handle and they were a match too, to a Richard Steinmann.” “Well, isn't it obvious? Call yourselves CSIs!” Greg, Nick, Catherine and Wendy turned around. “I have a theory,” the girl said, “oh by the way, I'm Jessica Crawford, amateur sociologist, I'm specialising in crime.” “Care to enlighten us?” Catherine asked. "It might sound stupid" Jess said. Everyone in the room listened attentively. “Hey, no theory's stupid sweetie,” Catherine reassured her, “theories are there to be proved right?” All agreed. “Well, the victims are brother and sister, there's a four year age gap between them right?” Jess said, “and Nick said he processed another brother, Richard who is how old?” “He's twenty-two. He's the middle child” Nick added. “Now, we got Anthony, the eldest at twenty four, Richard at twenty two and Hayley at twenty,” Jess continued, “and two out of three kids wound up dead.” “And your theory is?” Greg asked. “It's simple,” Jess said, “two's company, three's a crowd? Classic case of sibling rivalry.”

“So, you know Ray?” Greg asked. “Yeah, I do,” Jess answered, “he was a Doctor too.” “But you sound more British with a twist of American” Greg said. “I know, I am,” Jess continued, “they worked together in the same hospital after my family moved here.” Greg seemed impressed with Jess, even though they'd only just met. “So, why'd Ray let you in on this case?” Greg asked, "And how'd you know so much about it?" He hoped he didn't sound nosey. “God, you ask a lotta questions,” Jess laughed, “can tell you're a CSI.” “Yeah, I do,” he chuckled, “sorry if you feel I'm imposing you.” “Oh, don't be stupid,” Jess reassured him, “Ray talked me through it and he thought it'd be a good way of me getting into the who criminal sociologist field, thought I could do with some first-hand experience and what better way to do it than here at LVPD.”

“So we really gotta get our heads around this” Nick suggested. Catherine, Nick, Ray, Greg, Wendy and Jess stood around the large illuminated table, covered with evidence, photographs and paperwork. “So, let's go from the beginning,” Catherine said, “Me and Nicky got called to a four nineteen at Queensridge.” “We find twenty year old Hayley Steinmann lying on the floor, in the lounge of the property, with several stab wounds” Nick added. “Ray and I get called out just after you guys to a four nineteen at Paradise Palms,” Greg continued, “where we find the body of twenty four year old Anthony Steinmann, lying in the kitchen.” “Doc Robbins said that Anthony was stabbed” Ray added. “You guys think you're investigating two separate cases, until I examine blood evidence on the knife which Nick found at Queensridge,” Wendy chirped, “and that's when I find that the blood on the knife blade suggested they're brother and sister and the fingerprints are a match to their other brother, Richard.” “What do we know about him?” Catherine asked. “Well, I processed him last year,” Nick said, “he was caught for b and e and charged with that and assault.” “Does he have much of a record?” Ray asked. “Yeah, he does,” Nick replied, “it's as long as your arm.” “But what about any other suspects?” Greg asked. “None, Richard's fingerprints were the only ones found on the knife handle and at the scene,” Wendy added, “he's the only one for sure.” “So we gotta find him, ask him some questions,” Catherine said, “and tell him about his siblings.” “That's if he doesn't know already” Ray added.

“Brass, I need you to help us trace the whereabouts of a Richard Steinmann” Ray ordered. “That's easy,” Brass said, “my guys just picked him up now.” Ray looked confused. “Yeah, he got caught during a b and e” Brass grinned. “Okay, can Greg and my friend's daughter Jess join your interrogation?” Ray asked. “Yeah, sure” Brass smiled. Away they walked.

After getting absolutely no information out of Richard, Brass felt frustrated. “Don't piss me about Richie boy” Brass hissed. Jess nudged Greg. “Tell him I can try and get him to talk” she whispered. Greg nodded, and then whispered to Brass. Brass glanced over at Jess and gave her the nod. Jess coughed. “Okay Richard,” she said, “seeing as you're not giving Captain Brass any information, maybe you can co-operate with me.” Richard Steinmann looked up at Jess. She signalled for Brass to leave the room as she thought he may have been off-putting for Steinmann.

“This is what I think went down, so you listen and you listen good,” Jess said, “you're the middle child, you got an older brother called Anthony and a younger sister called Hayley, they got it all. They had the attention of your parents that you craved but never got, simply because Anthony was the eldest and the first born and Hayley was the youngest and the only girl. You got pissed off that they were getting all the attention, your parents were buying them brand new stuff while you got hand me downs off your brother, but you got sick of it didn't you?” “Answer her Richard, you got pissed didn't you?” Greg added. Steinmann snarled at Greg and glared at Jess. It seemed as if he was signifying she was right in what she was saying. “I know what it's like Richard,” Jess said, “I'm the middle child too.” “Does it piss you off?” he asked. “Yeah, it does” she said. “Have you thought about sorting them out? Like beating them?” he asked. “Yeah I have” Jess answered. She glanced at Greg. He looked worried. “So what happened Richard?” she asked. “It's like you said,” he replied, “they got everything, it's like I never existed. I never had anything brand new. It was always my precious little Hayley or my beautiful boy Anthony, never anything about poor old Richard, it made me sick.” “So, you just thought one morning when you woke up that you'd go find your siblings and decide to kill them, all because you craved attention?” Greg asked. “Yeah, basically” Richard said. Greg gave the officer outside the interrogation room the nod. “You can take him away” he said. The officer put handcuffs on Steinmann and led him away. “Well, we got a result” Jess smiled. “Yeah, we sure did” Greg said.

Later on that evening at the local diner, as Ray, Catherine, Nick, Greg and Jess were sat at the table celebrating the day's success with a meal, Greg coughed and plucked up the courage to ask what he was dying to know, “Jess, did you really mean what you said in the interview room?” The others looked at him. “What? About siblings and wanting to kill them? No, I didn't mean it, it's only me child-wise” she replied. Greg gave out the impression that he felt stupid. Everyone laughed.

“So, Jess, how'd you find today?” Ray asked, while sipping on his beer. “You know what Ray?” Jess replied, whilst looking at Greg, “I've had the best day ever.” “What's wrong Greg?” Nick teased, “Looking a little flushed there buddy!” “Ah shut up man!” Greg said, with a tone of embarrassment. “So, sociology still your favourite subject?” Catherine asked. “Now I've thought about it, I really do like forensics,” Jess answered, “but, I don't have the brains for it, so I'm gonna stick to sociology.” “Maybe, you could be part of the team,” Greg suggested, “couldn't she Cath?” “You sound like you're hoping Greg” Ray laughed. “That is a good idea Greg,” Catherine said, “so Jess, what do you say?” “Okay, if you're sure” Jess agreed. “Good, welcome aboard” Catherine said, sipping wine from her glass, “oh and one more thing Jess, don't go frightening Greg anymore.” “Okay, I won't,” Jess smiled, placing her hand on Greg's shoulder, “I won't.”

Just as they were halfway through the celebration of the addition of the new member to their team, alerts arrived on Ray's phone. “Four nineteen, Lake Mead, all units respond,” he announced, “here goes another one.” “Great, let's get to it” Jess sighed sarcastically. “Welcome to the team” Greg smiled whilst winking at Jess. “Shut up Greg!” she chuckled. "Let's hope it doesn't involve sibling rivalry again huh?" Ray smiled.
