Captain
Danny Cannon has landed a gig directing the new soccer film Goal!
The New Statesman recently reported that Cannon was tapped to replace the award-winning director Michael Winterbottom in the film that will follow the life of Santiago Muñez, a Mexican soccer aficionado who crosses the border into the United States with his family when he's merely 10 years old. Santiago grows up in Los Angeles, going from one menial job to the other, until he meets a retired English soccer player who immediately recognizes Santiago's potential and helps him get into the English Premiere League Club, Newcastle United.
Goal! will not be one movie, but a trilogy following Santiago's life as he tries to adjust to life in England, later goes on to play with Real Madrid, and eventually gets the opportunity to play at the World Cup. The movie stars Kuno Becker as Santiago and will feature soccer players David Beckham and Kieron Dyer, among others, as themselves.
Though Cannon has directed the first installment of the trilogy, the Mexican director Jaume Collet-Serra has been chosen to direct the second.
The first installment of Goal! is expected to hit theatres on September 30th. Visit the movie's official website to learn more about the plot and watch the trailer.
