Fans who have been inspired by CSI to pursue a career in crime scene investigation won't have to wait to go to school to start practicing.

The British company CSI-Inc. has released a 'Do It Yourself' CSI kit, which includes all the tools used by real crime scene investigators. The kit includes 63 pieces, but various items can also be purchased separately, such as fingerprint kits with a variety of magnetic and non-magnetic powders and brushes; Smith & Wesson orange view filter glasses, body bags, inflatable bodies, etc.

"At first encounter you'd maybe ask 'who on earth would want a kit like this?'" said Iain Macauley, a spokesman for CSI-Inc. "But the answer is that there is a vast range of potential user groups. As well as students at any of the UK's 47 universities providing forensic courses - where there are also huge waiting lists - they are also suitable for private or corporate investigators, and even for amateur sleuths seeking to solve minor domestic or workplace mysteries."

The company's rationale for creating the kit was simple enough, according to Macauley. "CSI television shows are massively popular viewing - both fact and fiction. They create intrigue and drama, but leave many of us wondering if we could solve crimes if only we had the equipment."

The CSI Kit costs between £495 and £565, while individual pieces vary from £14 and £359. It is not known yet if the items will be available for purchase in or from the US, but fans in the meantime can entertain themselves with the CSI: Forensic Facial Reconstruction Kit.
