'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Emmy's Best Drama Category

CSI Files

Captain
The Academy of Television, Arts, and Science today announced the nominations for the 57th Annual Emmy Awards, and though CSI received various technical nods, the series failed to snatch the Best Drama nomination.

The nomination has been given to the show every year for the past three years, but the streak stopped in 2005. Instead, the newcomer Lost, along with Deadwood, Six Feet under, 24, and four-time-winner The West Wing, will have a shot at the statuette in the ceremony that'll take place this fall. The surprising move came after months of positive speculation that birthed from the show's Emmy buzz, which was particularly generated by the super-sized season finale "Grave Danger." But the episode only got the series a directing nod.

Below is a list of nominations awarded to CSI and CSI: Miami this year.

[*] Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series - Guest director Quentin Tarantino came up with the storyline for "Grave Danger," in which CSI Nick Stokes is kidnapped and buried alive. The 90-minute episode was watched by 35 million viewers, the largest number up to date. This is the first time CSI has been nominated in the category.

[*] Outstanding Makeup For A Series (Non-Prosthetic) - For the 100th episode of the series, "Ch-Ch-Changes." The make-up department is comprised of Melanie Levitt, Matthew Mungle, Perry Sorel, and Pamela Phillips. They had the task of turning various men in to women for the storyline, which revolved around transgenders. CSI was nominated in the same category in 2003 and 2004, and received a win in 2002.

[*] Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series – For the episode "Down The Drain." Mace Matiosian and the rest of the team received a statuette for their work in the season 3 episode "Fight Night" in 2003. They were also nominated in the years 2002 and 2001.

[*] Outstanding Sound Editing For A SeriesCSI: Miami's only nomination, for the episode "Lost Son." This is the first time Ann Hadsell and her team have received an Emmy nomination for their work. Miami's only other technical nomination was Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series in 2003, which the series won.

[*] Outstanding Single-Camera Sound Mixing For A Series - for the episode "Down the Drain." Comprised of Mick Fowler, Yuri Reese, and Bill Smith, the team was nominated in 2004 for their work in "Grissom Vs The Volcano," in 2003 for "Revenge Is Best Served Cold," and in 2002 for "Primum Non Nocere."[/list]

Actors Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows), George Eads (Nick Stokes), and Gary Sinise (Mac Taylor) were considered strong contenders by various critics, the franchise received no acting nominations. Helgenberger wasn't the only one shut of the Best Actress category, as Allison Janney, who won 3 years in a row for her work on The West Wing, didn't make the cut. But Miami's ratings rival Medium was granted an acting nod for Patricia Arquette.

HBO lead the way with most Emmy nominations, 93 in all, while CBS came in second with 59. Of all the nominations granted, only Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series will be broadcasted, as the academy recently decided not to air the technical awards in the actual ceremony.

The 53th Annual Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 18th in the Shrine Auditorium in Hollywood and will be broadcast by CBS. To read a complete list of nominees, visit the Academy of Television, Arts, and Science's official webpage.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

Lame, but then again, so are the Emmy's in general. I rarely watch them.

And I'm sorry to any "Medium" fans out there, but Patricia Arquette is just so... blah. It's like watching a sponge perform. The guy who plays her husband, on the other hand, is really good. Regardless, both Alison Janney and Marg Helgenberger kick her ass when it comes to acting. No contest.

Well, here's hoping Quentin gets it- he truly deserves it for such an amazing episode.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

This was a little disappointing. I have a hard time swallowing the fact they got shut out of Best Drama Series catagory. Personally, I am happy for Patricia Arquette, though, I am not sure it was entirely deserved, and the really disappointing nominations for me were the Desperate Housewives noms. (Sorry, I am not a fan...at all).

OOoo, and for record (cause I know there is at least one other House fan here) Hugh Laurie got nominated!!! Wahoo!

I wonder if the shut out will cause the CSI franchise to maybe think about "changing the formula" so to speak.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

I hate Desperate Housewives. What a pointless show. It shouldn't be in the comedy category. I've never laughed once. Not once. It's awful. Their idea of comedy is to have the main character fall down a lot. Hi. This isn't 1929. Comedy has evolved. And there's nothing smart about it. It's pretty much petty shock value wrapped in anorexia.

Just thining that Arrested Development is gonna lose to that piece of crap makes me wanna hurt someone.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

Desperate Housewives is okay. But I can't really relate to these women even though they are my age because a. They all have tons of money and I don't, b. To me the real 'Desperate Housewives' are the single moms I see in my neighbourhood every day of the week trying to make ends meet. Anyways that's my political schpiel for the day.

But I'm really disappointed that CSI didn't get a Best Drama nod and that GE didn't get a nod for Supporting Actor after the amazing job he did in Grave Danger. Maybe we should stick some of the members of the Emmy committee in a plex box and cover them with real red ants!

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

I'd say George deserved the nod for all of his performances this year. He's been doing an awesome job every season, but he's been really doing it this season in particuler... at least when he was actually in an episode!

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

CSI deserved the best series deserved the nod. George deserved the best supporting actor nod. And Marg deserved the best actress nod. They were robbed, and I refuse to watch the Emmys this year.

And I can't stand "Desperate Housewives." I watched it this season for Steven Culp. Now that his character has been killed off, I'm relieved I don't have to watch it anymore. His talent was wasted.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

Gosh, this SUCKS. I can't believe that! I was really, really pushing for George to get a nod, but I thought AT LEAST Marg or William would get one. This is really... guh. Quentin really does deserve the directing nod, as does all the technical directors, but they deserved the drama category as a whole. This... blah. That sucks big time.

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

Hee hee, woot 'House' fans! :D :D He better win!

Probabaly the only highlight of the Emmys. Everyone knew 'Lost' and DH was going to get nominations...grrrrr. Yeah so they're new, so what?! Give some credit to CSI for putting up with them and still beating them in the ratings despite being 4 years old! GE, I feel for you man. We all know you rock. QT, congrats on the nod, you deserve it. *sigh* Well, for all that it matters, here CSI, here's your homemade little statuette made out of tin foil and pipecleaners from the folks here at CSIFILES. We love you. :D

Re: 'CSI' Gets Shut Out Of Best Drama Nomination

After this, the Emmys have lost all credibility with me. To not nominate a show that has been number one in the ratings almost since the first season is ridiculous. Millions of viewers can't be wrong...

Sure they can. Reality TV is a testament to that. LOL. I would agree, however, that Emmy's relevance is nonexistent to anyone who watches TV outside of the industry itself. No one cares who won what. Certainly not the viewers. And they are not going to stop tuning in, because some critics (and who are these people, anyway?) or Academy Members didn't share their enthusiasm.

But seriously, Emmys, and any other award shows for that matter, have never had much credibility to me in the first place.

They should call it what it is: "What We, a Bunch of Academy Members, in Our Purely Subjective Way, Think Was the Best This Year Awards." That would reflect the reality of the Emmys.

There are plenty of outstanding shows, historically, that didn't get any Emmy recognition. Buffy, Gilmore Girls, Farscape, Sports Night, and I can go on and on. If it's a so-called "genre" show - and CSI is that, too - it's almost certain to get snubbed, no matter how good it is. Unless it's "Alias." I swear, "Alias" people dose their submission tapes with hallucinogens to get those nominations. LOL.
