CSI: Crime Scene Investigation--'Turn, Turn, Turn'

I'm surprised that one of the best moments of this episode hasn't been mentioned once:

Haley's mother says to Brass: "Do you have any idea what it's like to lose a daughter?"

The slight change in Brass's expression tells us he knows exactly what it's like and when Nick bows his head, we know that he's very aware her comment struck a nerve with Brass. This made me feel for Brass because he's got to sit there and act like he doesn't know what it's like but Nick does and he reacts for Jim. It was my favorite moment of the episode because of the subtle way both PG and GE played it.

You know, I'm wondering if he's mourning her loss as her being estranged from him, or whether something has actually happened to Ellie and the writers are setting it up?
