    Disclaimer:I don't own CSI:Miami or any of it's characters.
Summary:There were rumors about the season 5 finale some time ago, with Horatio going down in a plane crash. Of course, it didn't happen but I just had this idea in my head, what if it did happen? As are all my fics this one is H/Y.

The doorbell rang. It was almost dinner, and Yelina was setting the table. It rang again. In the midst of balancing plates and getting the spaghetti out of the boiling pot of water, she didn't want to be interupted in her dinner preparation.

"Ray!" She yelled, hoping her teenage son would get the door.

The doorbell sounded the third time, but before she could yell for her son again, she heard him hurry past the kitchen to the front door. She heard the door open, and conversation. Their visitor was male, she could tell, and the voice familiar.

"Mom! It's for you." Ray entered the kitchen, not offering a clue of who their visitor might be.

She took the boiling pot off the stove and handed Ray the serving utensils. "Help me out here honey."

Ray grumbled a little under his breath as his mother made her way out of the kitchen into the living room.

Yelina was surprised by the visitor in her living room. Ray had offered him a seat on the armchair and he sat there looking uncomfortable. She wondered if he was here on police business.

    "Frank, long time."

The large Texan stood at the sound of her voice. "Sorry to barge in on ya like this."

"It's alright. Can I get you a drink?" Yelina asked, noticing the beads of perspiration on his forehead.

"No, thanks, I'll make this quick." He paused, wiping the sweat away with the back of his hand. "You better sit down."

Yelina took a seat couch. She had a bad feeling about all this.

"I'm not sure how to say this..." He started. Yelina instantly knew what this was about.

"It's Horatio isn't it?" The familiar feeling of dread when Horatio had come to her door about Raymond the first time they thought he was "dead", then the second time in Rio, sank in again. She knew Horatio had to have been shot, wounded, or worse, dead, in the line of duty.

"Yeah." Frank nodded. "He was escorting a prisoner - "

"I know, to a neighbouring county to stand trial. He told me." Yelina cut him off. That was today? It seemed liked a long time ago when Horatio told her of the coming trip he was to make. Now, she didn't want the whole story, just how Horatio was. Did the prisoner escape and shoot Horatio in the process?

Frank looked surprised. "Yeah that. The plane never made it. It was supposed to have landed hours ago. Air traffic control lost contact with it an hour after take off. The pilot radioed in that they were having engine trouble."

A plane crash. He was in a plane crash. The words resounded in Yelina's head. Shot, maybe he would have survived, but a crash? What were the odds of Horatio making it out of that alive? Yelina shook her head ever so slightly, as if trying to convince herself this was a bad dream.

"They think it crashed somewhere over the Glades. Search and rescue are lookin' for them now. We had to inform all next-of-kin. You're Horatio's only family." It was as if Frank felt the need to explain why he was there that evening.

Yelina composed herself. "Thank you for coming to tell me."

Frank stood, not wanting to impose any further. "I'd better go. I'll call once I have any news."

    "Thank you." Yelina repeated.

She closed the door behind Frank and stood, staring at the closed door. It couldn't be. There had to be some kind of mistake. Maybe the plane would turn up, and Horatio would be ok. Her heart ached, and tears threatened to fall. She cared for her brother-in-law deeply, always had. Deep down inside she loved him. She knew he felt the same way about her, but they had been apart for ao long since she had left for Brazil.

Horatio had taken her comment on him not coming round often during their encounter while she was doing her P.I work, personally. Since then he had made time and effort to drop by, not just to see Ray or take him for an outing, but for dinners as well. Those dinners turned into late night talks where they caught up on each others' lives and culminated in him finally working up the courgae to ask her out on a date. It was a date to her, but he had insisted it was just dinner and a movie, without Ray Jr. That one date. That was a week ago. And now this. Just when she thought perhaps they had stopped dancing in circles round each other, and had a chance at something together.

"Mom?" She heard Ray's concerned voice behind her.

She turned, blinking away tears, but Ray picked up his mother's distress.

    "What's wrong?" He asked.

Yelina forced a smile. She didn't intend to keep it from Ray, he had the right to know. She put an arm round his shoulder and guided him to the couch, ready to tell her son what Frank ahd just told her.

Thanks, glad I got you guys hooked on this story too. Got some time on my hands now, so here's more:

It was strangely quiet. Too quiet. Was he dead? Horatio couldn't be sure. Then the pain hit him, sharp, stabing pain in his chest, his arms, his legs. It hurt to breathe. Pain, that meant he was stil alive. He forced his eyes open, and found himself staring at what was left of the ceiling of the small passenger plane. Part of it had been torn off, and Horatio could see the setting Miami sun. He swallowed and tasted blood. Slowly he raised a shaky right hand to his forehead where he located a gash just above his left eye. Blood was flowing down and ran into his eyes. No wonder everything looked red.

Next he tried his other arm, lifting it sent jolts of pain from his shoulder down his arm. Probably broken. Horatio tried wiggly his toes. The worked, but with pain. His shirt felt wet. Had they landed in the water? He lifted his head slightly, and that action sent pain, nausea and dizziness that forced him to lay his head down again. After some moments of doing nothing but laying there with his eyes closed, Horatio forced himself awake again. He lifted his head, and fighting the dizziness, he looked down at his body. Part of his left leg was wedged under a seat. There was a growing red patch on his left abdomen. With his good arm he fingered the wound, finding a piece of what he thought was metal sticking out. Something was stuck in his abdomen, but he knew he shouldn't pull it out. It was probably keeping him from bleeding out. He lay his head down again and tried to calm his breathing. A broken arm, probably broken ribs, being impaled by some metal stick, and he hadn't even tired his legs yet. The day was turning out to be just peachy, he thought.

His thoughts travelled back to the events of the day. Ralph Brenner, a serial killer was to be transported. Horatio had went along with an officer from the Miami-Dade department of corrections. Shortly after take off, the pilot informed them they had engine trouble and had to make an emergency landing. Horatio's mind registered the treeline before he felt the impact, then everything went black. Was he the only one who had survived? What about the corrections officer and the pilot?

"Caine." A flash of orange came into view. Apparently he wasn't the only one who had survived. "Must be my lucky day."

Ralph Brenner stood smiling down at him. He was still in his orange prison-issue jumpsuit, and his hands were still cuffed. His legs still bound in shackles. The crash must have broke the cuffs that bound him to the plane seat, Horatio thought. Brenner looked worse for wear, sporting several lacerations on his face, but other than that he looked in much better shape than Horatio.

"This is my ticket out of here." Brenner knelt down beside Horatio.

"Not if I can help it." Horatio said, gritting his teeth.

Brenner reached for Horatio's trousers, looking for the keys to his cuffs. Horatio grabbed his arm, but was too weak to put up much of a fight. Brenner landed a punch into Horatio's ribs, sending him gasping in pain. The keys found, Brenner freed himself from his bonds. He then reached for Horatio's gun that was holstered at his side. He then took Horatio's back-up revolver that was strapped to his ankle.

    "Thanks." Brenner sneered.

"If you run, I'll find you." Horatio said through gritted teeth.

"I don't think so Caine. Way I see it, you'll be gator bait before the night's over. We're in the middle of nowhere, it'll take 'em days to find you, or what's left of you, after the gators had their fill of you."

"The plane had a transponder. MDPD SWAT will be here before you can get out of the Glades." Horatio countered.

"Then maybe I need some leverage." Brenner said. He rifled through Horatio's pockets again, finding his wallet. He opened it and started emptying it's contents. Soon he found what he was looking for. A photograph. It was something Horatio never let anyone know, that he had it there in his wallet, but now the merciless serial killer had found it. He waved the photograph infront of Horatio.

"Pretty wife, good looking kid." Brenner sneered. "Never figured you for a family man."

"They're not my wife and kid." Horatio said. It was the truth. It was a picture of Yelina and Ray Jr, taken some years ago, before he had sent them to Brazil. It had helped him through many a lonely night, but now he regretted keeping it there.

Brenner laughed. "Nice try Caine. Kid looks like you. If you come after me, my face will be the last thing they ever see."

Brenner stood up again. He turned and made his way out of the wreckage. Horatio tried to calm his growing anger. Being angry was no help, but he didn't stand for anyone threatening Yelina or Ray Jr. His thoughts settled on Yelina. That one night they had last week when he had worked up the courage to ask her out for dinner and a movie. Her had made clear his intentions, it wasn't some dinner to talk about work or Ray Jr. It was purely out of his continued attraction for her that had lasted all these years. He comment about him not seeing him months jolted some part of his brain awake. The boundaries he had set himself crumbled with each night he spent having dinner and late night talks at her house. He had been given a second chance at Yelina, and he wanted to take it, but he wasn't sure how. That one night out was the first shaky step he had took towards something they could possibly have. That and the fact that she now held a potentially dangerous job, truth was he wanted to make sure she was safe, and he had made it clear he would always look after her.

Now he had possibly sent a serial killer after her and his nephew. He fought his anger. He had to go after Brenner. He never allowed anger at a suspect to get in his way but for now the anger fuelled him, and dulled some of the pain. He propped himself up on his arms, ignoring the pain in his left arm. With one mighty jerk he pulled out his ankle that had been wedged under the seat. He let out a cry of pain.

Steadying his ragged breathing, he tried to control the waves of pain and nausea. He forced himself to sit up, the dizziness making him taste bile in his mouth. He spit the bitter taste out. Brenner had a headstart. And he still wasn't sure if his legs worked.

He heard a rustling sound from outside. The gators were hungry already? The orange jumpsuit re-appreared before his eyes.

"I changed my mind Caine. I underestimated you once, and you caught me. I won't underestimate you again." Brenner cocked Horatio's 9mm and pointed it at Horatio's face.
