I was wondering what songs calm people down. For me off the top of my head I can think of a few:

    Hallujah - Jeff Buckley
    Everybody Hurts - REM
Knockin' on Heavens Door - Bob Dylan most of his songs are calming in or way or another.
Fire and Rain - James Taylor

I'll post more when I think of them.

    Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones
Your Song - Elton John (lots of Elton :p)
    Imagine - John Lennon
    The Masterplan - Oasis

Really, just any slow low-beat song calms me down. Sometimes I really need that. Right now these are the only ones I can think of, but most Elton John songs calm me down :p

Hmm.. Well whenever I'm sad I listen to Fix You by Coldplay and I SOB to it for like 10 minutes and then I get sick of being sad and it really picks me up. :p I think it's calming too.

Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden
Gardian Angel - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
    Wonderwall - Oasis
    You and Me - Lifehouse
Hide And Seek - Imogen Heap

Can't think of anymore right now.

Such a wonderful song. I like Jeff's version the best. I've also heard covers from Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson (which isn't as bad as you'd think it would be), and of course, the orginal by Leonard Cohen.

Some of the songs I turn to when becoming introspective:

Just when I needed you most - Randy Van Warmer
Learning how to live - Lucinda Williams --actually her whole "West" cd would qualify, as well as most of her music
    Anything sung by Jim Reeves
Coming back to you - Leonard Cohen
Go rest high on that mountain - Vince Gill
Anything by Peter, Paul & Mary (c'mon! That'll make you smile!)
    Anything by Amy Grant
Anything by the Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash & Kris Kristofferson)
    Most anything by Shawn Colvin
and most of the older classic country music (Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, etc)

no matter whats wrong, if i'm upset or sad the Elton John album "Tumbleweed Connection" on vinyl (the cd works too but it isn't the same) always makes me feel better. some of them aren't slow or soothing but the combination of all of them always has the power to calm me down.

    Ballad Of A Well-Known Gun
    Come Down In Time
    Country Comfort
    Son Of Your Father
    My Father's Gun
    Where To Now St. Peter?
    Love Song
    Amoreena
    Talking Old Soldiers
    Burn Down The Mission

another elton john song that always works is Song for Guy, an instrumental piece from the album "A Single Man"

theres a specific EJ album that goes with any mood i might be in. :)

Yay! :D I'm happy to see more Elton John, I grew up on Sir Elton thanks to my mom, so I love everything he's done :D More songs that I can think of at the moment...

Brown-Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (this song seems to follow my mom and I around... it plays on the radio randomly when we're together, or in shops, the grocery store, on shuffle on my iPod...)
    Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
    Free - Donavan Frankenreiter
When The Stars Go Blue - The Corrs (I also love the original by Ryan Adams)
