Hit and Run
Hi y'all. I was looking for the name of a poem that touched my heart deeply some years back. My mother recently passed away of breast cancer, and I found myself remembering this poem. At first I thought it was Christina Rosetti. Then I thought Thomas Hardy. Even the title I thought it was has led to an unsuccessful internet search.
A rather short poem, its jist is as follows: a widower must walk uphill to fetch water from a well, and he is unable to miss his deceased spouse on his journey b/c she never took it with him. However, he does miss her on the return journey -- as she greeted him home every time.
Does anyone know the author & title? I know it is Victorian.
