CSI:NY may appear to be set in New York, but in actuality most of the filming takes place in Los Angeles. However, twice a year the production heads east to capture the essence that is uniquely New York and that is exactly what they have just done.

The show recently undertook a hectic production schedule taking them to Times Square, City Hall, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Central Park West and the Coney Island boardwalk. “There are things you imagine through your typewriter, but to come here … it feeds you,” says executive producer Pam Veasey.

“The super-duper dog walker, the guy with 15 dogs on leashes, that doesn’t happen in L.A. That happens in New York,” Veasey says. “The steam coming out of the buildings, the way the signs look, what people wear and how they move around, you start looking at the details. We may not like black. Black may not be our palette, but a lot of people here wear black,” she continues. “People’s faces aren’t traditionally California beautiful. There’s a history in faces in New York. You can pinpoint ethnicity in New York City.”

The show’s stars seem happy to visit New York as well. “What I notice about being here is that a lot of people were watching our show, because they’re coming up to me and talking to me on the street about it,” says Gary Sinise (Mac Taylor). “It seems like a lot of New Yorkers are paying attention to what we’re doing. That’s a good feeling.” Sinise’s co-star Melina Kanakaredes (Stella Bonasera) adds that the warm reception in New York is the complete opposite of what people think about New York. “I’m from Ohio originally, [and] it’s funny to hear the perception of what people think about New Yorkers and [to see] what the reality is. It’s so different.”
