Well, if they needed the experiment, the only way to do it was to match the weight- meaning find someone who weighed less and make it up.

Mac may weigh more than Danny, but it could be far more than what they needed to make up for. It wasn't a huge weight they were carrying. They had to have the weight exact to compare the depth.
