PHOTOGRAPHER AT ZOO FATALLY MAULED BY BEAR

Ukraine..Emergency officials say a bear in a Ukraine zoo fatally mauled a man who fell into the enxclosure trying to photograph it. The 27-yr. old victim had climbed over a 13-ft. fence to get closer to the bear at the Zoo in Mykolav on Sunday. Zoo workers tred to stop the bear by pouring buckets of water on it, and throwing loaves of bread to distract it, plus other objects to no avail! the man was pronounced dead by zoo officals!

Man tries to bike, swim and run away from police

BOSTON (AP) - A 29-year-old man accused of stealing a bicycle in Boston's North End tried to complete his own version of a triathlon to get away from police.

Police said Jason Duncan of Somerville rode the bike onto the North Washington Street Bridge, jumped off the bridge into Boston Harbor and swam to shore when they tried to arrest him Tuesday night.

He then ran down a harbor walkway before being caught.

Suffolk County District Attorney's spokesman Jake Wark says Duncan pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court to one count of larceny over $250. Bail was set at $500.

A message left with Duncan's attorney was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Woman accused of trying to bribe Wis. police

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin authorities say an Iron Mountain, Mich., woman tried to get out of a drunken driving arrest by offering sex and $10,000 to a police officer.

Witnesses called police last Friday when they saw a suspected intoxicated driver with the Michigan license plate "TROUBLE" leave a Wisconsin Dells parking lot.

A criminal complaint said 30-year-old Elizabeth Ann Kommes was given a sobriety test, was arrested, then made her offer.

Kommes is charged with drunken driving as a fifth offense, bribing a public official and driving with a revoked license.

A message was left for Kommes at her Iron Mountain residence on Wednesday.

Boy, 11, tracks speeders with toy radar gun

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Police can't be everywhere, so 11-year-old Landon Wilburn is on patrol in the Stone Lakes subdivision in Louisville. Landon told The Courier-Journal he used to shout at speeders to slow down - then had a better idea.

Dressed in a reflective vest, wearing a bicycle helmet and armed with a Hot Wheels brand radar gun, he points and records the speed of passing traffic.
The boy also carries a flashlight with a built-in siren.

Subdivision resident George Ayers said he has seen drivers lock up their brakes when they saw Landon clocking them.

Officials say the city will install speed humps in the neighborhood if 70 percent of residents agree and are willing to put up half the money.

Man claims he found a 7-inch knife in sandwich

NEW YORK (AP) - A man claims that he was nearly cut when he found a knife baked into the bun of a cold-cut 12-inch sandwich he bought at a Subway restaurant in New York City.

John Agnesini said he knew his lunch didn't taste right. The 27-year-old says he was horrified to find a 7-inch serrated blade in the bread.

Agnesini said it was protruding into the half of the sandwich he was about to start chomping on and that it "could've slashed" the side of his mouth.
Instead, he said he fell ill with "severe stomach issues" for hours after eating. He attributes it to food poisoning from the embedded blade.

Subway restaurants spokesman Kevin Kane said food safety and customer comments are taken "very seriously" and that the company is "investigating the facts."

Officer wrecks squad car 29 minutes into job

HOBART, Ind. (AP) - Police officer Tim Pochron's first day on the job went poorly: Less than a half-hour into it, his squad car was wrecked in a crash.
Pochron was inside his house at 12:29 a.m. Monday when someone hit his new squad car parked outside, as well as a tree, police said.

"Pochron was 29 minutes into the first day of his new job when his parked squad car was struck," Lt. Steve Houck said.

The driver tested positive for drugs, was arrested and taken to a hospital, police said.

Pochron, 26, was sworn in last week. He was supposed to work the morning shift Monday. Instead, he spent the morning filling out paperwork at the police station.

The force of the crash bent the rear axle of the squad car. Deputy Chief Jeff White said the car can be repaired, though he's not sure how much it will cost.

Pochron "was just heartbroken," White said.

'Lucky' koala bear survives head-on car collision

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - They call this koala bear "lucky." The 3-year-old male koala was struck by a car and carried for seven miles with his head and arm wedged through the vehicle's front grill, but was not badly hurt.

Staff members at the Australian Wildlife Hospital in Queensland state dubbed him Ely "Lucky" Grills, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported on Tuesday.

"He was very flat and unresponsive for a couple of hours, but (after) a bit of TLC and some feed and some fluids - and a bit of pain relief because obviously he would have had a headache - he was up and eating and doing really well," hospital manager Gail Gipp told ABC.

Hospital officials could not immediately be reached by The Associated Press.

ACTIVIST GLUES HIMSELF ONTO PRIME MINISTER
A climate change activist in London assured himself a captive audience--by gluing himself to the Prime Minister of Britain. Dan Glass, 24, grasped the sleeve of Gordon Brown's suit with a glue-covered hand at an awards ceremony, Tuesday night, according to Plain Stupid, a group known primarily for it's attention-grabbing stunts. Glass clamped his glue-slathered hand onto Brown's suit during the reception and began lecturing him about climate change. Brown shook Glass off rather easily, according to a Downing Street spokesman. "The glue wasn't that sticky" the spokesman said. No charges were filed! ANOTHER WACKO:scream:

Piglet with monkey's face
Villagers were shocked after a monkey-like piglet was born in China.

Curious locals flocked to the home of owner Feng Changlin after news of the piglet spread in Fengzhang village, Xiping township.
"It's hideous. No one will be willing to buy it, and it scares the family to even look at it!" Feng told Oriental Today.
He says the piglet looks just like a monkey, with two thin lips, a small nose and two big eyes. Its rear legs are also much longer than its forelegs, causing it to jump instead of walk.
Feng's wife said the monkey-faced piglet was one of five newborns of a sow which the family had raised for nine years.
"My God, it was so scary. I didn't known what it was. I was really frightened," she said.
"But our son likes to play with it, and he stopped us from getting rid of it. He even feeds it milk."
Neighbours have suggested the couple keep the piglet to see how it looks as it matures.

WOMAN ON FLIGHT TRIES TO OPEN DOOR

Berlin, Germany..Two drunken British women went on a rampage on a charter plane, hitting one flight attendant with a bottle of vodka and tried to open the cabin door as the aircraft was cruising over Austria at 32,800 feet, police said. The staff on the flight from Greece to England eventually forced the woman back to her seat and the pilot made an energency landing in Frankfurt. The rampage occurred when a flight attendant denied the woman more alcohol because they were already visibly intoxicated. One of them took a swipe at a cabin attendant with a bottle of vodka, and the other tired to open the cabin door. [CRAZY] The two women were taken into custody by police at the Frankfurt airport and given a breathalyzer test. Both were leagally drunk. An hour later the plane was on it's way to Manchester, England!

6-legged deer gets new home after dog attack

ARMUCHEE, Ga. (AP) - A six-legged deer found in north Georgia after being attacked by a dog has a new home. An Athens woman with a permit to keep unique animals in captivity has agreed to take the unusual deer. The animal was found July 18 near Armuchee and underwent surgery to repair its minor injuries.

Berry College animal science professor George Gallagher took the deer after its surgery.

He said he is hoping to avoid making the deer a "circus sideshow." He said the animal's condition prevents it from surviving in the wild.

The fawn has two complete pelvises and two tails. One of the tails had to be amputated.

Gallagher said the fawn has a condition that is similar to Siamese twins in humans.

Labrador 'runs' for mayor of Fairhope, Alabama

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) - One of the candidates in the race to become Fairhope's next mayor is considerably more hairy than the rest. He also has twice as many legs and a constantly wagging tail. Wille Bean Roscoe P. Coltrane is a 7-year-old yellow Labrador retriever whose owner has taken a satirical poke at politics by launching the pooch into the race.

But Willie Bean may not be up for that rough-and-tumble world.

"When a little dog barks at him, he cringes and he runs away," owner Tress Turner told the Press-Register in a story Sunday.

Eel drink goes on sale for Japan's hot summer

TOKYO (AP) - It's the hottest season of the year in Japan, and that means it's eel season. So, bottom's up!

A canned drink called "Unagi Nobori," or "Surging Eel," made by Japan Tobacco Inc., hit the nation's stores this month just ahead of Japan's annual eel-eating season, company spokesman Kazunori Hayashi said Monday.

"It's mainly for men who are exhausted by the summer's heat," Hayashi said of the beverage, believed to be the first mass-produced eel drink in Japan.

SELMA, Ore. (AP) - The bride wore a white veil, a red garter and black neoprene. The groom, too, was in diving gear, set off by a red bow tie. When the pastor pronounced them man and wife, Brian Wilson and Christina Gunn took off their breathing gear and exchanged a kiss 20 feet under the surface of the Illinois River in Southern Oregon.

The underwater ceremony was performed last week, the Grants Pass Daily Courier reported.

The vows were written in pencil on a white slate, which were displayed for Pastor Jim Bard, also a diver.

Groups to pray for lower prices at gas stations

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Two prayer services will be held at St. Louis gas stations to thank God for lower fuel prices and to ask that they continue to drop.

Darrell Alexander, Midwest co-chair of the Pray at the Pump movement, says prayer gatherings will be held Monday afternoon and evening at a Mobil station west of downtown St. Louis.

Participants say they plan to buy gas, pray and then sing "We Shall Overcome" with a new verse, "We'll have lower gas prices."

BOY BITES BACK WHEN FAMILY PIT BULL ATTACKS

Brazil..An 11-year old boy in southwest Brazil bit the family pit bull when fighting for his life after the dog attacked him, local media reported Tuesday. The accident occurred near a construction site in the state of Mimas Gerais. The 6-yr. old dog named Titan, who the family says is usually calm and loving all of a sudden pounched on the boy. "I grabbed him by the neck and bit him" said the child, who escaped with only an arm injury and a broken tooth. Nearby construction workers who heard him screaming ran over and pulled the dog off! Pit bulls are un-predictable:wtf:

GIRL, 12 FALLS 14 STORIES, LANDS ON SOOT PILE

New York..A 12-yr. old gril fell into a chimmney on the roof of her apartment building, plummeted 14 stories down the flue and landed almost unscathed in a pile of furnace soot. Grace Bergere, a young rock drummer, remained hospitaltized for treatment of an injured hip. The 3-ft-deep pile of ash and dust saved her life, cushioning her fall when she crashed into a basement furnace, fire officials said. Authorities said grace was showing a cousin, visiting from California, the spectacular view of the city from the top of her family's West Village apt., which has a rooftop deck, overlooking the Hudson River. To get the the highest point, she climbed up a 25-foot ladder alonside the big brick chimmney. When she reached the top, she slipped and fell into the gaping mouth of the chimmney and plunged down the narrow flue to the basement below!

Man accused of trying to rob store with empty box

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Charleston police said a man tried to rob a movie rental store with an unusual weapon - an empty cheesecake box. Earlier this week, the suspect placed the box on the counter of the Movie Gallery with a note saying it contained a bomb. He told the clerk the bomb would be detonated remotely if he wasn't given cash.

The clerk refused and the suspect fled.

Police arrested 43-year-old Paul Parrish II of Charleston on Wednesday.
Sgt. Aaron James said Parrish allegedly confessed after he was shown a store video of the attempted robbery. Parrish allegedly told police he needed money for gas and cigarettes.

Parrish is charged with first-degree robbery. He's being held at South Central Regional Jail and doesn't yet have an attorney.

Minn. baby born 8/8/08 at 8:08; 8 pounds, 8 ounces

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) - Hailey Jo Hauer was born on the eighth day of the eighth month in 2008 at 8:08 a.m. So it wouldn't make sense for her to weigh anything other than 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

Lindsey Hauer thought staff at Lake Region Hospital in Minnesota were joking when they told her the time of her daughter's birth. Then she got a call from the birthing suite noting Hailey's weight.

Nurse Jenny Harstad joked that she tried to shrink the baby to 18 inches from her actual 19.5 inches.

Several hospital staff members pledged to buy lottery tickets.

R.I. man finds cocaine in used police cruiser

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) - A Burrillville town councilor got more than he bargained for when he bought a used police cruiser at auction. Kevin Blais bought the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria in an online auction from the Hartford, Conn., public works department.

He was cleaning it last week when he noticed a cracked area on the one-piece molded seat assembly.

When he removed the seat assembly to clean the floor, he found a plastic bag containing a substance that local police later confirmed was cocaine.

Blais speculates that a suspect stuffed the drugs through the crack to prevent police from finding them. Burrillville Lt. Kevin San Antonio says Hartford police were "apologetic" when he told them of the discovery.
Hartford police spokeswoman Nancy Mulroy said Friday that based on their past experience with drug suspects, Blais' speculation is almost certainly correct.

"It's not unusual that perpetrators or suspects try to hide stuff in the cruisers before they go to booking, where they know they'll be searched," she said.

Chicken crosses the road, then abandoned by thief

KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - Why did the chicken cross the road? In the case of Jerry Sleater's 5-foot, 400-pound bright blue rooster, that's apparently as far as whoever was trying to steal it could get it.

When the 76-year-old Eastern Washington man went to get his newspaper Thursday morning, the big bird named Rudy was lying beside the road.
Sleater has kept the metal rooster perched on his property south of Kennewick for two years and says, "Rudy is a family pet. He doesn't go anywhere, but he's part of the family."

Sleater said he thinks that whoever was trying to steal Rudy got spooked after pushing the oversized rooster down a dirt embankment.

He said he purchased Rudy two years ago from a yard ornament store that was going out of business.

Grandma arrested for driving with child on roof

MARATHON, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a grandmother was arrested for driving around the parking lot of a Marathon grocery store with her 3-year-old child sitting on the roof of the car.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Publix store Tuesday and arrested a 54-year-old woman after she was driving around with her three-year-old granddaughter on the roof of her car.

The grandmother was released from jail 15 hours later.

The woman said Thursday she would never let anything hurt her granddaughter. She says she was driving at "snail-speed" and holding the child's leg.

Authorities say the woman told police she was giving the child some air and letting her have fun.

She faces charges of child abuse. The child is back with her mother.

Tenn. constable wins election by 1 vote _ her own

SNEEDVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - All it takes is one vote to win. Just ask a Tennessee woman who was elected constable by voting for herself. Angela Tuttle, 32, said her father encouraged her to run as a write-in candidate because no one else was vying for one of the positions in Hancock County, which is in northeastern Tennessee.

Tuttle said her husband initially didn't even realize she was running.

"I finally told him about a month before the election," she told The Associated Press on Friday. Her husband didn't think she would win, but now he "just grins at her," she said.

Hancock County election officials said 131 voters of the 674 registered in the 3rd District voted Thursday. Tuttle's vote was the only one cast in the constable race. She will be sworn in Dec. 1.

The certified nursing assistant and mother of a 10-year-old son will help serve warrants and patrol neighborhoods in her district. She said her father, a longtime constable who won his own re-election in another district, will "show her the ropes."

44-pound feline Prince Chunk gets new home in NJ

BLACKWOOD, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey's fat cat has a home. A family in southern New Jersey will get the 44-pound "Prince Chunk" next week, according to the Camden County Animal Shelter. The shelter won't disclose the family's identity.

About 500 people applied to adopt the 10-year-old cat found lumbering around Voorhees after his owner lost her home to foreclosure.

Catherine Harr, president of the animal shelter's board, said the cat's new family is a couple with a teenage child. She said they are building a castle to go over Prince Chunk's litter box.

The adoption comes after a vet gave the cat a clean bill of health - other than his large weight.

Harr said the couple was chosen because they have past experience with cats, and their finances are stable - unlike the cat's former owner.

Prince Chunk received national attention when he was found, including an appearance on "Live with Regis & Kelly." The attention was so intense that shelter officials last Sunday had to sneak the cat out of a foster home and move him to another foster family, Harr said.

Thousands of people from as far away as London and California called to inquire about adopting the cat, Harr said. Unfortunately, she said no one who contacted the shelter was interested in adopting any of the more than 200 other cats and kittens in the shelter's care.
