Re: Episode #611: 'Guerillas in the Mist' **CONTAINS SPOILER

WOW - OK, can we say JUMP THE SHARK! I was pulled into the episode in the beginning and really liked the first 20 minutes, but after that .... ARGGGG

    1. Loved how H just calmly got out of the vehicle that was blown up - SUNGLASSES AND ALL, no less — without a scratch on him! Now that's believable. Haven't TPTB heard that we're tired of SUPER H!??!

    2. So the guy w/the vapor gun just decides he wants to chat w/H, who's holding a gun to his head - if I were him, I would've taken one look @ H and pulled the damn trigger - what a dumbass.

    3. Where the hell was H's back-up, or Eric's for that matter? Don't these guys believe in the buddy system at least?

While I liked Eric's flashbacks, and the fact that he told Cal about them, the whole idea of him going to the piere w/out backup was just stupid. Cops don't do that.

Ohh, and yea, this gun thing was TOTALLY out of the CSI's jurisdiction. This was homeland security and FBI/Customs all the way. You think the federal gov't would leave the interception of a dangerous weopon like that in the hands of local law enforcement??? I love how H trumps everyone - it's such BS.

I'm sure there's plenty of crimes that go on in Miami that need the CSI's attention - can't the writers think of more PLAUSIBLE plotlines?

Now I know it's just TV show, and a lot of people like the flashy way this show does action, but hear me out. Every show has rules. For example, if you're creating a sci-fi show, you have certain rules you have to live w/in, rules that were created by you. The audience will suspend believability, but only BECAUSE you set up the rules - you said, "This show takes place in the year 2300 in space." So viewers buy that, and all the possibilities that go along with it. But once you set up that universe - how certain aliens look, the languages they speak, the type of space ships, etc. — you can't break the rules. If you do, the audience will be turned off b/c it's "unrealistic." Even though the whole concept may be "unrealistic" in and of itself, the audience will buy it b/c they know going into it what they're buying into. But they won't stand for basic rules to be broken.

Now, how does this relate to CSI:Miami? Here's my take: The creators/writers made rules when they started this franchise. They said this is a franchise based on science and fact - we're dealing with REAL WORLD stuff. Those are the confines they must work in b/c they set the rules. Now, there are some instances where you can bend the rules — (ie: by making it all about hot supermodels and rich people, b/c they do exist, or having the CSIs work as both interrogators/cops and in the lab b/c they have to go through police academy). You can bend the rules, but you can't break them (as Cal pointed out to Dan Cooper) - and if you do break them, that's it, you've jumped the shark and it's over.

H getting out of that Hummer completely unscathed was BS and totally stupid. I'm tired of him being untouchable and a part of me really wanted to see him crawling from that vehicle, hurt and struggling. I would've settled for a few cuts and broken sunglasses, but we couldn't even get that. WTF???!!!

If the writers aren't creative enough to work w/in the confines of the rules, then they should let some new blood come in and get off the show. This is a franchise that prides itself on representing law enforcement - and they even have consultants who were police and CSIs. It's a true disservice and disgrace to them that this has gotten so out of hand.

You want me to buy that half the murders in Miami happen to beautiful women and rich people, fine - there's plenty of them there to make that somewhat plausible. You want to stretch reality and have the characters do multiple jobs, that's cool, I like that - we don't need a ton of characters (HINT HINT), and besides, that's how this show was set up from day one. But you're gonna tell me that H didn't get a scratch on him when he was IN A CAR THAT SUFFERED AN EXPLOSION??? Sorry, no can do.

This show has gotten so off course it's rediculous. They really should let Donn Cortez (the author of several CSI:Miami novels) start writing for the show b/c he has a strong grasp of the characters and the confines in which the show must work. They really need new writers, but who knows what's going to happen b/c of the writers' strike...

    Oh well, vent over.

I've got to agree that they're getting way off course from investigating crime scenes. Any show of this nature is going to have some literary license and exaggerate things occasionally and have episodes where extreme things happen, but this is just going to far.

There is virtually no chance that someone could have escaped a hummer that had flames engulfing it and shooting several feet above that roof. Much less escaped entirely unscathed. With clean clothes. And done so calmly.

And since the guy was already ready to kill Horatio in the hummer, then "finish it off", would he really have sat there and not fired the weapon again?

I liked that they showed that Eric is still having some post traumatic stress effects since so many times TV shows act as though people get over really traumatic events in a week or two. And I liked the bit with Calleigh talking to him and saying that whatever he said was just between them.

Oh, and one other thing. I wish they'd cut back on the special effects. They just get annoying after a while. The part while Eric was finger printing was almost disorienting. Meh.

I figured out the trick...the writers are so dumb they think we're dumb. I would've totally bought Horatio getting out of that burning Hummer without a scratch, burn or speck of ash on him if this were a science fiction show like Mutant X, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, any of the Star Trek shows except Enterprise but not CSI: Miami. News flash for the writers: THIS IS NOT SCIENCE FICTION!!!
I thought the whole premise of the 3 CSI shows was a fictional but, for the most part, fairly accurate portrayal of CSIs solving crimes. I know they have to cheat on some things, like how quickly they get DNA test results back. But they are venturing a little too far into Sci-Fi land with Horatio getting out of that burning Hummer clean and uninjured. I have Corey Miller's email address, courtesy of his CSI: Miami season 4 blog. I may email him a copy of this post. Or better still, a copy of miamirocks's post and a copy of this post. I say we all apply for jobs as writers and editors on CSI: Miami. We couldn't do any worse. Heck, we might even do better. One thing: the application-for-employment line starts behind me. So, who's with me???

    For those who want it...
    Here's Corey Miller's email address:

Sorry I don't know the email addresses of Jerry Bruckheimer, Anthony Zuiker and David Caruso...or I'd share them as well.

I totally agree with you on that Green Eyes. I hated that mix of black and white in some spaces and color in the others. I almost got a headache.

It hasn't just jumped one shark it's jumped at least a dozen.

If this is the sort of writing that's happening out there I hope the writer's strike continues.

We only saw the shadow of one man in the warehouse but it takes two to move the DX4 and it didn't stay in one place.

It also sounds like the Sound Effects guys ripped off the Gluon Gun sound from Half-Life

Re: Episode #611: 'Guerillas in the Mist' **CONTAINS SPOILER

Aww I really wanted something positive to say about this episode, and, okay, while I can say some positive things about it, the negatives kind of strip that away for me.

    Positive things:

Valeeeeerrrrraaaaaaa! FINALLY!!!!! The return of the elusive DNA specialist.

Ryan wearing the same colour shirt as Frank's tie and how I just found that really humorous when they were standing next to each other outside the CSI building - chuckle.

Frank is back in civvies Woo Hoo! I still enjoy the raport between Frank and Horatio but I'm missing the quantity of time they have together on-screen. I much prefer Horatio and Frank to Ryan and Frank.

    Ummmm, cool flashbacks. *shrug*

Oh and I did enjoy Horatio's interrogation of the soldier near the end. Really good. The best for a while now.

    Bad things:

Horatio leaving his Hummer that was on fire completely unscathed reminded me of the 'A' Team and that's just not good for the quality that once was CSI Miami.

Horatio and his crack shot. Not him shooting the guy with the weapon but the two guys by the plane. Unbelievable marksmanship and so not in a good way.

Umm, what was the premise of CSI Miami again? I was waiting for BA, Face and Mad Dog Murdock to appear and I think that would have sealed things for me.

All In all, I feel like I jinxed the program when I first commented on this board, thinking I would be praising CSI Miami from that point on, but sadly, I've found myself at odds with the program more than ever since my first comment.

Still, this was an improvement on last week's episode and also the Calleigh debacle one, but that does not mean it was good.

    ...Sorry...

    :)

I have to agree with most of the comments regarding the unrealistic edge the show has taken... when 11:00 came it almost made me want to shake my head & ask.. I stayed up an hour past my bedtime for this??? Sorry.. I just am not feeling any connection between the team members anymore.. it just all seems so strained...

That's another great point - and I couldn't agree more!

What happened to the team working TOGETHER to solve crimes - everyone is so disjointed and disconnected from each other. For example, the scene with Ryan and Calleigh - why on earth didn't Ryan fill Cal in briefly on his information on the suspect? I mean, would it have killed him to be like, "I spoke to this woman from customs, and I think they might be involved in all this." They're working the same case and it's important info for Cal to know in case something else comes up w/the evidence, etc. Communication people!

Oh, and why are they always interrogating suspects by themselves? Eric, Ryan, H - they had no back-up and there's typically just a uniform in the interview room, not a detective. Didn't this show make a big deal about not interviewing a suspect alone in Season 2 (I think it involved Speed interviewing this woman who was trying to play him by coming onto him....can't remember the name of the episode)...???

Like I said previously, bending rules is fine, but when you set certain rules, you have to stick to them.

As for the "team" - they are anything but a team. You can't get a scene w/more than two people in it anymore. And that's just boring. The great thing about this show - that used to make it stand out among the other CSIsa and crime dramas - were the characters and the way they interacted. In my opinion, when Speed died that interaction began to go downhill. It was still OK up to the beginning of Season 4 (I liked that ep. where Eric, Ryan and Cal had to work a case w/out H and there was some in-fighting - at least that's interaction!). But now, these characters hardly interact at all, and there's never more than two or three of them in the same room at one time. Remember the good ol' days when the whole team would go to a crime scene and work it together, with H in the lead? Now, it's like H is a loner and the team is broken apart.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the writers need to take a page from NCIS - check out the FANTASTIC character interaction - more than two people in a scene! ::gasp::! The interaction on Miami is often flat and stiff now — especially when the other characters are interacting with H. Horatio is so distant and cold that those scenes are just bleh.

What happened to the banter? What happened to the team??? I really liked that Eric had flashbacks about being shot, they should do more of that stuff. Continuity is good! I mean, with H, there's beeen all this drama added to his life, but yet there's so much that's unresolved - what happened to Maddison and Suzy, what's going on w/Ray, Jr., etc.?

Last night's show had so much promise and started off great, but it just fizzled after the first half hour or so. I was really excited about the weapon , but then everything was sooo unbelievable that I couldn't get into the episode. There's fiction and then there's ... well, bad writing. I think the fans could do a much better job in writing for this show - the fanfiction I've read is ten times better than what I'm seeing on-screen.

That would be season 1's 'Grave Young Men'. :D (But that whole argument with Speed and Bernstein was really just a ploy to make it look like everything she told Speed was just between him and her, not realising there was a detective behind the glass the whole time. :))

I totally know what you mean--they really are disjointed. I don't think I've ever seen three of them in the same scene. It's always Calleigh/Ryan Calleigh/Eric Horatio/Ryan Horatio/Eric Calleigh/Alexx. Methinks they need a tad more cohesion.

The episode last night had me rolling my eyes when we saw the so-called 'vaporising people'. Um, not believable in my opinion but a neat idea. Plus the fact that Horatio didn't get a spec of dust on him when his Hummer blew up kind of made it that much more idiotic but oh well. It's probably likely that even with a thousand bullets coming at him, he'd manage to avoid every single one. And I'm sorry but...If I was put in the situation where I could shoot the man with the giant gun, I would but I wouldn't go so far as shooting the other two men near the plane.

Don't get me wrong, I love Horatio. I just didn't love that scene, lol. That last questioning of the young 'soldier' was really great though, it was a breath of fresh air to see some more emotion come out of monsieur Caine.

Overall I thought the episode was a bit boring and too political. Not that there wasn't any interesting scenes--because there were, but I guess I expect more from this show six seasons in.

this episode came off with a bang in the first half hour. Loved everything about the first half and all the Ryan time and Ryan got a cocky a little. but by the second half hour i was like what am i watching i almost forgot for a spilt second i was watching CSI:Miami. i liked the whole flash back thing with Eric i thought that he was going to get shot again i was yelling at the TV don't get shot again. the thing with the Hummer and H what was that about i expect to see sunglass broken and some blood but nothing no he came out clean as a whisle. yea and we need more of "the team" together instead of the whole "two people" thing. hopefully next week we will all see more of the CSI:Miami that we all know and love so well

The epi was just..ok. But completely unrealistic & not very CSI-ey. The whole ending w/ super-H stepping out of his super-hummer had me laughing...it reminded me of the Terminator when the robot guy steps out of the semi that had burst into flames  So stupid. Not to mention then he jsut blows away the 3 guys...boom, boom, boom. Horatio is like a killing machine lately. Yeah, they were bad guys but still. :rolleyes

Overall, aside from the incredible Horationator...not bad.

    speed_cochrane:
Ohh, right! Now I remember! Thanks:) I just remembered Speed saying something at the end, like, "I would never interrogate a suspect without my partner" or something like that. But everything Miami is doing now totally dishonors Speed's statement. (BTW - what the heck happened to Det. Bernstein - he just disappeared  )

I definitely think that, since Speed left, the chemistry has been lacking. I was talking to a friend of mine about it, and we were comparing some of the CSI:M characters to NCIS. Speed was the saracastic part of NCIS's DiNozzo (Eric was like the "womanizing" side of DiNozzo). W/out DiNozzo, NCIS would really be lacking, and, similarly w/out Speed, CSI:M is lacking.

Now I love Ryan, but I have no idea what makes him tick and lately they're writing him like he's a "Mini-H" - I'm not sure what his personality is. I liked him better in Seasons 3-4.

The team needs to start working together , showing up at crime scenes together, etc. It's just become way too predicatable - oh, there's Cal and Eric; oh, there's H and Eric; oh; there's Ryan and Cal, etc. This pairing off thing is getting old (except for the two leads who, oddly enough, NEVER get paired off, but I digress...) I mean, can't more than two of them interact in a scene?

In real world, this weapon is called "Metal Storm"

And it's MUCH MORE DEADLY than this "Vaporizer".

Re: Episode #611: 'Guerillas in the Mist' **CONTAINS SPOILER

    Where do I start?

I'm not one for totally negativity so I'll say they had a nice idea.

To bad it didn't work out too well. I found the whole thing heavily disjointed and fake. Whoever said we need more communication is correct. I mean you watch shows like 'Bones' and 'Without a Trace (woo, I got a call back for this one -irrelevant, yes)' and they are constantly holding moments where the entire group gets together to muse over a case. It's the family/friend dynamic that make the characters seem real. Who goes to work and doesn't discuss anything with any one?

On the plus side, Valera!!! I missed you! It's great to see her back and looking as beautiful as ever. And Frank, in PLAIN CLOTHES. That man looks good out of a uniform, funnily enough, he looks more official.

Okay, 'Super H'. Really, really annoying me, Miami. Get your act together. Oh, Calleigh can easily get ran of the road into a cannel, swim out in a very dramatic way and sit on the edge looking like something of the cover of Vogue. What happened to acting? You don't have to look pretty all the time, you just have to act. I get that it's not the actors faults though, the make up department needs to think about something‘s.

But Horatio really was the straw that broke the camels back for me. When he got out of that can without even a speck of dust on him, I changed the channel. Why?

I want to end on a positive note, so I'll say that I love the character interactions that DO happen. I think we've had some real development this season. Perhaps the lack of people in one scene is down to the cost. Coverage is expensive and it can take much longer if you have to retake and move cameras to get everyone in.

I had a little trouble following the episode. It may havee something to with my sister's new dog mot understanding the concept of bedtime, but the whole thing seemed weird.

At least Frank's on homicide again. I think he and Ryan called each to color coordinate thier cloths.

And there is no way H could just walk away from that explosion. But that's part of the fun of being Super H.
