Re: The Fan Art Forum Guide

ok - I am completely new at making icons. I feel like a complete idiot asking this question. I have photoshop elements.

I have seen this step in several tutorials
Duplicate base and set to screen
I cannot find anything like this.
I have found the options to duplicate a layer and duplicate an image. Where do I find duplicate base and what does it mean to set to screen? Thanks!

you are not an idiot! i had the same problems when i started making icons :)

duplicate base means duplicate the base layer, so what you've found is correct. "set it to screen" means you have to change the type of layer, so to say. make sure you marked the duplicated layer and then change the blending mode, which is set to "normal" to "screen", and that's it.

    hope that was any help.

Cathwillows is right, you're not an idiot. For the longest time i didn't even know how to use the crop tool.

And a way to duplicate the base is CTRL J, it's just easier

For the first 6 months I had Photoshop, I didn't even know what a layer was. So you're not an idiot! :)

This is how I can explain it:
Press CTRL J (Like csikickurass said)
You can also right click and press "Duplicate Layer" on your layer palette.

Now see where the "Pull down Menu" is? You click on that, it should say "Normal" then when it opens, in a drop down menu kind of thing.. You will see SCREEN.

    I hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks to both of you. That helps alot. Does anyone know of any beginner type tutorials to help learn how to change the background color in incons. I have tried 2 so far with no success. Again this is for photoshop elements. Thx!

Ok, question. I recently relized you can download brushes. And relized that you dont use them like textures, and you have to put them in your graphics program. So I copyed and pasted into the corect folder(I have paint shop Pro 11 btw) . It worked for the first few, but then they wouldnt show up on my brush list. so i decided to do it the hard way: open the brush file, and manuly add it to the list. It worked, but now when i go to use them ; insted of simply being able to click and they will show up where the cursor shows. When I click nothing happens when i click and drag they start out small(no matter what size i set them at) and become bigger while rotating. Like this:

Am I being incredibly stupid, and not doing somthing? I ahve tried adgusting the brush settings, but nothing works.
    Help?

Re: The Fan Art Forum Guide

OK, Ive got another question, 2 actually.

    Teh first;
I have a chance to get PhotoShop and I have no clue what to get.

    The choices I have are:

    ~Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended
    ~Photoshop Elements 4.0
    ~Photoshop Elements 5.0
    ~Photoshop Elements 5.0 Premium Edition

I mostly want to know how much of a difference PhotoShop Elements is compared to Photoshop CS3. Also wondering if there is a big difference between Photoshop Elements 4.0 and 5.0 , and just overall advice of what i should get.

2nd question; where is a good place to find a lot of wallpaper tutorials?

You guys might hate me and all my questions now.

Re: The Fan Art Forum Guide

Hey! I've looked at a lot of tutorials, and learnt a lot, thanks to you guys. But, there's still a few things i'd like to ask:

    1. I've downloaded some fonts from dafont.com and extracted them into the fonts folder, but can't seem to use them. Any ideas?
    2. I kinda get layers and colouring and stuff now, but i'm still totally confused when it comes to brushes and textures. Can someone explain how to use them in simple terms please?

    Thanks in advance xxx

Re: The Fan Art Forum Guide

i use photoshop and i don't know if it's translatable...

to your first question: i had that same problem at first. someone told me that i had to open the fonts folder after i extracted the new fonts there and then i could use them. it worked, but i don't know if that really was the right solution....just try it :)

i don't know if you already added them to photoshop, or what program you use...but if you haven't there should be a shotoshop file included in the download. just open your program, go to file -> open, then you open the brush file and it will be added to your program automatically. i think it should be the same with textures. now how to use them...if the brushes are icon brushes you can just select your brush tool and add any brush you like to your icon.

for the textures, go to layer -> new fill layer -> pattern... then you can choose a texture you'd like to use. the only thing left to do is play around with the setting of that layer. i set most of the texture layers to screen but that's up to you.

i hope that was any help.
