Obit: Father of James Earl Jones

Actor Robert Earl Jones dies at 96
    9/18/2006 6:13 PM ET

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Actor Robert Earl Jones, a fixture in Broadway shows and movies and the father of actor James Earl Jones, has died. Jones, 96, died Sept. 7 at the Lillian Booth Actors' Home, according to the home and Dale Olson, his son's agent.

Jones was a third-grade dropout from Senotobia, Miss., who worked as a sharecropper, then became a boxer before arriving in New York City and taking up acting. The poet Langston Hughes cast him in an early role in the Harlem Suitcase Theatre.

Jones appeared as boxing champion Joe Louis in Spirit of Youth among other films and Broadway productions before his career was interrupted in the 1950s when he was blacklisted for refusing to testify before the House un-American Activities Committee.

His movie career resumed by the late 1950s. He had roles in films including Odds Against Tomorrow,Wild River,The Sting and Witness in a career that lasted into the 1990s. In all, he appeared in more than 20 films.

He also appeared in several stage productions with his son, James Earl Jones, the actor who gave voice to Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies, among dozens of other roles.

In addition to his acting, Jones ran marathons, including the New York City marathon in 1996.

Besides James Earl Jones, Robert Earl Jones is survived by son Matthew Earl Jones and a grandson. Funeral services were private.

Star of Cleopatra Jones Films Dies
    Oct 5, 8:11 AM (ET)

BALTIMORE (AP) - Tamara Dobson, the tall, stunning model-turned-actress who portrayed a strong female role as Cleopatra Jones in two "blaxploitation" films, has died.

Dobson, 59, died Monday of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis at the Keswick Multi-Care Center, where she had lived for the past two years, her publicist said.

At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, Dobson was striking as the kung-fu fighting government agent Cleopatra Jones in 1973. She reprised the role in 1975's "Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold."

"She was not afraid to start a trend," said her brother, Peter Dobson, of Houston. "She designed a lot of the clothing that so many women emulated."

Dobson also appeared in "Come Back, Charleston Blue,""Norman, Is That You?""Murder at the World Series" and "Chained Heat."

She had TV roles in the early 1980s in "Jason of Star Command" and "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century."

Dobson lived most of her adult life in New York, her family said. She was diagnosed six years ago with multiple sclerosis.

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread

I heard about that this morning. He was so young, it's awful. :(

I know this is more sport related than TV related, however a lot of sports stars now are considered celebrities.

Details as follows are taken from
    www.yahoo.co.uk

The world of snooker has been paying tribute to Paul Hunter after the three-times Masters champion lost his 18-month battle with cancer at the age of 27. (Picture: World Snooker)

Hunter, who was dubbed the "the Beckham of the baize", died at 8.20pm last night at Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield, five days before his 28th birthday. He leaves wife Lindsey and daughter Evie Rose.

The Yorkshireman, who was diagnosed with neuro-endocrine tumours of the lining of his stomach in

March 2005, was widely expected to add the World Championship to his list of titles until illness took hold.

Seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry was among those to lead the tributes, saying: "Paul was just a really nice guy and a great player. When he first emerged on the scene, he had the ability you always thought would eventually result in him becoming a world champion. Sadly he never got the chance to fulfil that goal. But his record, especially in the Masters at Wembley, spoke for itself."

World Snooker chairman Sir Rodney Walker added: "I'm sure that everyone who met Paul, as well as his millions of fans and the sporting public as a whole, will join me in sending most sincere sympathies to Lindsey, Paul's parents, his family and friends.

"Paul was a man who had everything going for him - an outstanding talent, good looks, fame, riches, charm and a beautiful wife. This shows us just how quickly life can change. It's a bitter blow for snooker but most importantly for his family and our thoughts are with them."

Hunter, who turned professional at the age of 16 in 1995, appeared to be beating the disease when he returned to competition.

However, his condition deteriorated and he was taken into hospice care last Friday.

Despite chemotherapy treatment, Hunter remained committed to resuming his career, but he won only one match last season and fell from fifth to 34th in the rankings.

Hendry continued: "Before he took ill, Paul was in the top four in the world and maybe even had his best days to come.

"Every player on the circuit was pulling for Paul to come through because he was just a genuinely nice guy who never fell out with anyone. He just wanted to play the game.

"My thoughts are with his wife, daughter and family on what is a sad day and a day I've never experienced during my time in the game."

Former world champion John Parrott paid the following tribute: "It's a great loss to the sport but more importantly than that it's a great loss to his family.

"Paul played the game with a smile on his face. He was a bright and bubbly character and I never heard him complain. He was always such a happy person. We're all going to miss him."

Hunter won his first major title at the age of 19 at the 1998 Welsh Open, which he won again four years later when he also claimed the British Open trophy.

But he will be best remembered for his exploits at the Wembley Masters. Hunter recovered from 7-3 down to beat Fergal O'Brien 10-9 in the 2001 final and fought from 5-0 adrift to beat Mark Williams 10-9 in the final a year later.

He completed a hat-trick of Masters victories in 2004 when he came from 7-2 down to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-9.

Hunter's best World Championship performance was reaching the semi-finals in 2003, where he led Ken Doherty 15-9 before the Irishman stormed back to win 17-16.

A Premier League spokesman has confirmed that there is to be a minute's silence before this week's matches in Preston on Thursday.

I heard that just a couple of hours ago. He was so young. Another reason to give some of my money to a cancer foundation. May he rest in peace.

One member of the NY Yankees was killed today, when his plane crash into an apartment building in NYC. This is breaking news so I don't have all the details but at least three other people have died so far.

As a lifelong Yankee fan, this is a huge loss. I saw this on the news, and I couldn't believe that a plane crashed into a NYC high-rise, and then I found out a few hours later that Cory Lidle was on the plane. I couldn't believe it. RIP Cory, you will be missed by all.

I want to say that I do feel bad that multiple people lost their lives today, and I also feel for everyone's familes and friends.

    but,

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, this is good for our team. Because you won't be as strong next season.

As I said I still really feel for everyone who died as well as their families and friends.
