    I just went donating
    - First of all, when you're ever in an accident, it's always good that the medics know immediately what kind of blood type you have.
    - Every time you donate, your blood gets a full check up. So if there's anything wrong with you, you'll know immediately (high/low blood pressure, liver diseases, cancer,... ) and you can respond on time.
    - Helping mankind always makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside :D

    - If I'm in an accident and am unconscious, how can I tell them? :p

    - I never donated blood...

    but thanks for answering. :)

btw, how do I know what my type is anyway? without donating blood, I mean.

I had my blood type tested yesterday at my University. The blood services clinic had a booth set up. Turns out I'm O-. I also made an appointment to donate at their next blood drive.

You'll receive a donor card, and your blood type is on that ;)

To know what type you are, you can just go to the doctor and ask for a blood check. But the easiest way is just to donate.

I don't get why people wouldn't donate anyway? If your healthy, why not?

I'm afraid I'm not that healthy, so I'd rather not go.

Plus, I don't like doctors and I won't visit one unless it's absolutely necessary.

I hear you on the doctor thing, Mia. I'd be willing to donate if there wasn't that huge fear of needles hanging over my head.

I also don't know my own blood type but I do know my dad was Rh+ and my mom is Rh-. So I either have a combonation of both or one of those. Less than 20% of the world population has these types. Kind of scary when it could come to tranfusions...

Hmm.. too bad the poll from old board didn't transfer.

ANyways, donated blood again today :D tho my hemoglobin was 125 so it was close that thet'd say "nope, sorry cannot donate"

We actually have campagne in Uni and Polytechinic together in October, to get students to donate blood. I'd gone two weeks ago (because flu season and I had that already in August) but had antibiotics because of my wisdom teeth so I couldn't.

Anyways, now I am sure that my bloodtype is A+

It's been many years since I donated blood. It's gotten soooo complicated here now because of HIV, SARS, and everything else. Instead of just walking into a church hall that's having a clinic you need to make an appointment

Anyways my blood type is A+

I don't think it's bad that it's complicated when it's about something like this ;)
We have Red Cross Blood Service, 17 permanent donor centres. Then it also has this "The mobile blood collection units of the Blood Service arrange donor sessions in almost every town and rural district in Finland and at workplaces, military garrisons and educational institutions."

So all you basicly has to do is fill the form (takes like a minute) then they take your hemoglobin and check your form that there isn't anything that would prevent you from donating and then you are good to go.
Of course they take test sample of the blood. Took 25mins today to go thru it (there was quite a lot of people so had to wait a bit)
