CBS NEWS TO LAUNCH "48 HOURS: NCIS," A NEW SIX-PART SERIES TAKING VIEWERS INSIDE THE UNFORGETTABLE CASES HANDLED BY THE NAVAL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE

"NCIS" Series Star Rocky Carroll to Narrate

Six-Part Series Premieres Tuesday, April 25 at 10:00 PM

CBS News will launch 48 HOURS: NCIS, a new six-part series that will give viewers unprecedented access to some of the biggest cases handled by the real-life Naval Criminal Investigative Service, on Tuesday, April 25 (10:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/sneak-peek-48-hours-ncis-2/

48 HOURS: NCIS will introduce viewers to the agents that have worked on some of the agency's most significant investigations, who reveal, step-by-step, how they track killers, crack fraud cases, and how they hunt terrorists using street smarts and technology. Narrated by Rocky Carroll, star of CBS' NCIS, the new series will explore the kinds of difficult cases that have inspired CBS Entertainment's successful primetime series NCIS, the #1 drama on television, as well as NCIS: LOS ANGELES and NCIS: NEW ORLEANS.

"The range of the real-life NCIS missions is quite extraordinary," said senior executive producer Susan Zirinsky. "Those missions featured in 48 HOURS: NCIS will be told by those who know the cases best – the agents and in their own words. Viewers will also experience the wide range of emotions the agents feel when working these cases. They told us that 'every crime is a tragedy. It involves parents, sisters, brothers, husbands...we work for them too. We feel it very personally.'"

The United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and is responsible for investigating felony crimes, preventing terrorism and protecting secrets for the Marine Corps and the Navy. The agency operates from more than 140 locations around the world and aboard every aircraft carrier and big-deck amphibious assault ship at sea, according to the agency. "We take care of each other," said a longtime NCIS agent.

"For the first time, viewers will get to know these agents, who sometimes chase clues for a decade or more seeking justice. These are the cases they can't forget," Zirinsky said. "For them, the stakes couldn't be higher."

48 HOURS: NCIS is from the award-winning team behind CBS News' 48 HOURS. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

THE AGENT WHO INSPIRED CBS' "NCIS: NEW ORLEANS" TAKES VIEWERS INSIDE A CROSS-COUNTRY SEARCH FOR THE MURDERER OF A YOUNG WOMAN IN SAN DIEGO IN "48 HOURS: NCIS -- TO CATCH A KILLER"

    Friday, May 12, 10:00 PM, ET/PT

Scott Bakula with former NCIS Agent D'Wayne Swear

Murder victim, 16-year-old ballerina Meghan Landowski

D'Wayne Swear, a former NCIS agent who inspired CBS Entertainment's NCIS: NEW ORLEANS takes viewers inside the real-life cross-country search for the killer of a young woman in San Diego, in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "To Catch a Killer" to be broadcast Friday, May 12 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Marilyn Allen was found face down in shallow waters at the Camp Pendleton Marine Base in San Diego, Calif., in 1992. At the time, NCIS agents had little to go on. There was no DNA evidence and no witnesses. The case eventually went cold for five years, and the file passed from agent to agent. Indeed, Swear, then in the New Orleans office of the NCIS, dubbed the case Operation Jambalaya because of the various agencies involved.

They knew the victim, who was estranged from her husband, was from Ohio but had moved to San Diego.

"It just stays unresolved. It was really a no hoper, so to speak," says Swear, now a technical advisor on NCIS: NEW ORLEANS and the inspiration for the character portrayed by Scott Bakula on the CBS series.

Investigators got a break when a woman named Seanice Etienne reported to police that her boyfriend, Roosevelt Gipson, had, shockingly, admitted to her that he had strangled a woman and dumped her body in a lake. He was a former Marine who left the service to be near his family in Baton Rouge, La.

But could the agents get him to confess to them he killed Allen?

Narrated by NCIS series star Rocky Carroll, 48 HOURS: NCIS is a six-part documentary series from the award-winning team at 48 HOURS that gives viewers unprecedented access to some of the biggest cases handled by the real Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The series explores the kinds of difficult cases that have inspired CBS Entertainment's successful primetime series NCIS, the #1 drama on television, NCIS: LOS ANGELES and NCIS: NEW ORLEANS.

Also in this episode, a team of NCIS agents in Virginia investigate the murder of Meghan Landowski, a 16-year-old ballerina who was the stepdaughter of a Navy sailor. A few months before she was killed, she revealed that she had been inappropriately touched by her father's friend, who was also in the Navy. Given that history, investigators thought that a man named Robert Hicke was a likely suspect. But when DNA evidence cleared Hicke, the case was turned upside down and investigators were on the trail of a killer who wasn't on anyone's radar.

48 HOURS: NCIS -- "To Catch a Killer" is produced by Anthony Venditti and Alec Sirken. Jud Johnson, Phil Tangel and Marcus Balsam are the editors. Paul LaRosa is the senior coordinating producer. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

TWO PEOPLE SHOT DEAD EXECUTION STYLE, AND ONE OF THEM IS A NAVY SAILOR – WHO WANTED THEM DEAD, AND WHY DOES THIS CASE STILL HAUNT THE NCIS AGENTS WHO TRACKED THE KILLERS?

48 HOURS: NCIS: "One of Their Own"

    Tuesday, May 23, 10:00 PM, ET/PT

Murder victim Michael Patton, a bank employee

Murder victim Navy Petty Officer Lea Anne Brown

Two people were shot dead execution-style and dumped in the woods just off a rural road in Accokeek, Maryland. One of them was a Navy sailor. NCIS agents take viewers inside the investigation and deep into the murder case that haunts them to this day in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "One of Their Own," to be broadcast Tuesday, May 23 (10:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network.

In this third broadcast, NCIS agents open up about the investigation into the murders of Navy Petty Officer Lea Anne Brown and her friend, Michael Patton, a bank employee. In June 2001, both were found beaten and shot in the head. But why? Neither had any connections to any criminal activity, and there wasn't anything else that would make them obvious targets of such a vicious crime.

"This case was a very high priority for us," says former NCIS agent Chuck Alderman. "Fortunately, NCIS does not get homicides, especially double homicides, every day. So when we do get one, we take it extremely seriously."

One of their own was dead, along with her friend, as NCIS agents began the investigation, working with detectives from the Prince George's County Sherriff's Office.

"There was never a doubt in my mind that the NCIS was not going to find Lea's killer," says Lea's mother, Cari Freemore. "They told me that she was one of their own, and they would find them and make them pay for what they had done to my daughter."

What would it take to find who killed Brown and Patton?

IN A WORLD OF TERRORISM, SPIES AND HACKERS, NCIS AGENTS REVEAL THEIR APPROACH TO THE MOST IMPORTANT THREATS OF OUR TIME, ON THE NEXT "48 HOURS: NCIS"

NCIS agents reveal their investigations into taking down terrorists, hackers and spies in the next 48 HOURS: NCIS, to be broadcast Tuesday, May 30 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The agents open up about their emotions, fears, frustrations and successes in solving investigations that have national and international impact. NCIS came face-to-face with the impact of terrorism with the bombing of the USS Cole. The incident forever changed the way the agency approached terrorist attacks.

On Oct. 12, 2000, al Qaeda suicide bombers working for Osama bin Laden rammed the Cole with a boat full of explosives, as the guided-missile destroyer refueled in Yemen. The attack killed 17 sailors and wounded 42 others. It was the first successful attack on a U.S. Navy vessel in modern history and it launched a new world of terrorism.

"The attack on the Cole was...a watershed moment for both NCIS and the U.S. Navy," says retired NCIS Special Agent Michael Marks.

In fact, it was the largest crime scene they'd ever faced and one that was at risk of sinking very quickly. The investigation went from a local event to a global one and the agency began to understand the power of Osama bin Laden, explains NCIS Special Agent Cathy Clements.

The USS Cole investigation opened the agency up to dealing with terrorism cases and has continued to expand from there, dealing with today's technological attacks and spies. Also in the fourth broadcast of 48 HOURS: NCIS, agents take a closer look into the hacking of the Navy's Smart Web Move database, containing the records of 220,000 servicemen and women. A group called "Team Digi7al" taunted the Navy by posting 30 records online. The NCIS investigation would lead to a shocking discovery.

Also, agents open up about the hunt for a spy who had downloaded the schematics for a new Navy nuclear aircraft carrier with the intention of turning them over to Egypt so the spy could sink the vessel when it sailed into the Suez Canal. To catch the spy, agents set up a sting worthy of a crime novel, including dropping money in a hole.

NCIS AGENTS FACE A TOUGH INVESTIGATION INTO ONE OF THEIR OWN AFTER A YOUNG MOTHER, THE GIRLFRIEND OF A NAVY PETTY OFFICER, VANISHES

After a young mother, the girlfriend of a Navy sailor, vanishes, NCIS agents face a difficult investigation into one of their own that will challenge them on every level, on 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "Body of Evidence" to be broadcast Tuesday, June 6 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

In 1989, Annie Tahan disappeared without a trace. She left behind a newborn daughter and her boyfriend, Michael Paalan. Paalan told police that she had walked out on him. Four years after she disappeared, and with little to go on, police in Charleston, S.C. asked the NCIS for help.

"In working these cases, particularly a missing persons case, it's devastating to the family," says NCIS Special Agent Pete Hughes. "They have no answers."

"We have a motto that we live by," says NCIS Special Agent Jim Grebas. "It's: 'To the living we owe respect, and to the dead we owe the truth.'"

Kathi French, Tahan's friend, didn't believe Paalan's story, so she did whatever she could to get a law enforcement agency to look into the decorated sailor.

"Michael was an evil, evil man," French says. "I know with every fiber in my being that he had done something really bad to her."

But was French right? Did Paalan have something to do with Tahan's disappearance? Agents noted that Paalan was an intelligent electronics surface warfare specialist for the Navy, and he had to be sharp to be in that position. It would take years of challenging investigative work, multi-agency cooperation, surveillance and a sting operation to get answers. Moreover, they were investigating one of their own, making the case even tougher.

"We knew that this was going to be a mental warfare game," Hughes says. "If we're going to solve this thing, we've got to approach it right. Because something terrible happened to Annie Tahan, and we owe it to her."

WHEN THE INVESTIGATION OF A MURDERED NAVY PETTY OFFICER GOES COLD FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES, A NCIS AGENT GOES UNDERCOVER TO TURN UP THE HEAT ON A SUSPECT

"48 Hours: NCIS -- The Sting"

NCIS agents take viewers inside a risky undercover operation to turn up the heat on the key suspect in the murder of a Navy petty officer, in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "The Sting," to be broadcast Tuesday, June 13 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Mervin "Sonny" Grotton left work at the Naval Education Training Center in Newport, R.I., for his home in Belfast, Maine. As he walked to the front door that day in 1983, he was shot dead.

"There was someone hiding by the woodpile that was piled in the driveway, and for some reason they shot my dad," says Grotton's daughter, Rosalyn Grotton.

"He had the biggest heart and was so giving and so honest and so hard working and so loving," Grotton says of her dad.

Local police initially suspected his wife, Norma Small, but they didn't have enough evidence to arrest her. Then the case went cold for nearly two decades until a team of NCIS agents took another look.

"I grew up in a military family," says retired NCIS agent Dave Truesdale, a tough, tattooed law enforcement professional with a black belt in martial arts. "Any time that I see a military member hurt by somebody, it does push me to resolve that incident."

In this case, the agents had a hunch that Small was involved in some way. As they peeled back the layers, agents say they found out Small had a much different life when her husband was away on duty, one that involved other men. But was that enough to want her current husband dead?

To get evidence, they had to risk their lives by going undercover. Small was their initial target.

"Undercover operations can be very dangerous," says Truesdale. "You have to develop a role or persona, and once you develop that persona, you perfect it. In this undercover operation, I identified myself as Tony."

"Tony" set up a meeting with Small.

Truesdale, who says he likes going undercover because it forces him to think on his feet, also understands the risks. "Best-case scenario, you blow your line," Truesdale says, "worst-case scenario – you get killed."

The investigation would lead police to two men: Boyd Smith, the former boyfriend of Small's daughter, and Joel Fuller. Smith and Fuller denied they were involved. In 2002, Small, Smith and Fuller went on trial for the murder of Grotton. Smith and Fuller were acquitted.

Rosalyn Grotto wants justice for her father's killer. "I believe in an eye for an eye," she says. "I'm sorry, but when you do something like that, the same thing should be done to you."

MARIA BELLO JOINS THE CAST OF "NCIS"

    Maria Bello

CBS announced today that Maria Bello has joined the cast of NCIS as a series regular and will be introduced in the season's fourth episode. The 15th season of NCIS premieres Tuesday, Sept. 26 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).

Bello will play an NCIS agent who was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the army and served two tours in Afghanistan. After joining NCIS, she built her reputation as the agency's premier forensic psychologist. Unlike the other agents, she can second guess and challenge Gibbs, so there will be friction but also mutual respect. She is a positive force, mischievous and at times acerbic.

"We have always been big fans of Maria Bello's work and are excited to be introducing her as an agent who not only has a distinct talent, but also a unique relationship with Gibbs," said NCIS executive producers George Schenck and Frank Cardea.

Maria Bello has established herself as a leading actress with her many diverse roles in dozens of films, including The Cooler, with William H. Macy, which earned her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations; David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, opposite Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, which earned her a NY Film Critics Circle Award and a Golden Globe Award nomination; Oliver Stone's World Trade Center; Prisoners, opposite Hugh Jackman; and Paul Haggis' Third Person. Most recently, Bello appeared in the hit James Wan thriller Lights Out and the original series Goliath, with Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt.

NCIS stars Mark Harmon, Sean Murray, Emily Wickersham, Pauley Perrette, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Duane Henry, Rocky Carroll and David McCallum. It is produced by CBS Television Studios.

    NCIS

NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) is more than just an action drama. With liberal doses of humor, it’s a show that focuses on the sometimes complex and always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations. NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a former Marine gunnery sergeant whose skills as an investigator are unmatched, leads this troupe of colorful personalities. Gibbs, a man of few words, only needs a look to explain it all. The team includes NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee, an MIT graduate with a brilliance for computers; NCIS Special Agent Eleanor "Ellie" Bishop, a mysterious mixture of analytic brilliance, fierce determination and idealism who specializes in international threat assessment and global preparation; the charismatic, unpredictable and resilient NCIS Special Agent Nicholas "Nick" Torres, who has spent most of his career on solo undercover assignments; NCIS Special Agent Jacqueline "Jack" Sloane, who built her reputation as the agency's premier forensic psychologist and enjoys challenging Gibbs; and MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves, a successful and clever international agent who's on loan to NCIS as a terror liaison. Assisting the team is the energetic forensic specialist Abby Sciuto, a talented scientist whose sharp mind matches her unconventional style and eclectic tastes; medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard, who knows it all because he's seen it all – and he's not afraid to let you know it; and Ducky's protégé, the naïve Jimmy Palmer, who recently graduated from assistant to fully licensed medical examiner. Overseeing operations is NCIS Director Leon Vance, an intelligent, highly trained agent who can always be counted on to shake up the status quo. From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties.
