We love to know what happened, don't we Desertwind? Here' I read from DR interview, and i quote:

What was the idea behind the cocoon? Was it supposed to be a butterfly? Or something like a ring?
The cocoon was actually prompted by something Billy Petersen said in casual conversation as we discussed Grissom's teaching sabbatical for Season 7. I loved the idea. Unfortunately, as we tried to write it into future episodes, the fit was never quite right. I believe Sara cared for it, a butterfly emerged and flew away, and Grissom kept the abandoned cocoon in the terrarium in his office (which is actually where it ended up).
